Is it bad to turn the steering wheel with the engine off?

  AB182, Audi A5 3.0
I was trying to see the dials in my car today and didnt want to start the engine, so I just popped the key in to release the lock ont he steering wheel and turned it with the engine off. Obviously being power steering adn as the car was not moving, it was very difficult to turn, which got me wondering if its actually ok to do such a thing? Does it casue strain on any of the mechnical parts of the steering (i know its not good for the tyres) and could it casue damage to anything?

i agree its probably not he most common thing to be done; I only did it because the steering wheel was upside down and thus in the way of the dial kit, which i was tryign to see something on...

I think i am going to youtube how power steering works because iv never actually know the reason for power steering to be so hard to turn when compared with non-pas systems. Is it still rack and pinion setup with PAS?

Will just be lack of assistance, whether it be from the Pump or the EPAS unit. It's fine to do so with the engine off though, recently bled my PAS fluid system with the engine off.

It will be fine, but you will put more strain on everything anyway, because the car was not moving.
