is it worth protecting ncb ?

  a thirsty one
i currently have 10 years no claims bonus (which i have paid to protect for the last 10 years), i am currently getting some quotes for my renewal is it worth protecting it (an extra £50)?

If i have a bump and have to make a claim how does it work, will i lose a few years of my ncb if so thats means i will still have 5+ ncb which is what they often ask for when getting quotes but obviously i will have to still decalre the accident.

basically anyone in insurance can clarify for me if its worth protecting if i have 10 years ?

thanks

i would mate.50 quid a wee bit steep tho.basically protecting your ncb will allow you 2 claims in a 3 yr period without affecting your ncb.give the post office ago, i'm making a killing with the £50 cash back promo we're doing, that covers the price for your ncb then:D

last discussion i saw on another forum was that most people said it wasn't worth it. As you only lose a couple of years if it isn't. And you still have to declare your claim so your premium will still rise. I doubt anything over 5years no claims makes much difference.

yes, but what they do is knock a couple of years off their max discount rate. So for example when I had 9 years NCB and made a claim, come renewal time I had 3 years NCB ( 2 years off their 5 year max ). This reduced my NCB discount from 60% to 40%, increasing the renewal premium from 800 to 1200.

I always protect NCB now.

Yes defiantly.

Ive got 7 years ncb. When I was hit by an ex police inspector this time last year, he being a wanker refused to except reasonability (“I’ve been driving 50 years and never had a accident!!!”). Even thou I had two independent witnesses.

His insurance co (saga) wanted to pay out straight away (because of the witness statements) but he was a total knobber and as he knew the system told his insurance co if they paid up he’d sue them!

The whole thing dragged on until October when we were going to court and he was forced to accept liability.

My insurance would have risen from £390 a year on my 172 to about 900. so defiantly worth £50 more IMO

Ah fair enough, I'll make sure I protect mine next year then.

done some digging and deaddog is spot on, i figured i have 10 years ncb so if i have a bump and lose a few years i will still have 5+ but they take it off the 5 years, i will be protecting my ncb.

different insurance companies have different policies for ncb losses. Personally I always protect it.
