Not sure mate, but when it kept screwing up on Sunday night during 24, the NTL box nearly ended up out the window.... surely Virgin can't be worse than NTL... maybe they can :dapprove:

Gone on my cable box, Channel not available.

Fair play to Virgin for not giving in, about time someone stood upto Sky and made them realise they can't totally dominate the market.

To make up for the loss of revenue that cable companies would've paid for, Sky needs roughly 150,000 people to switch from cable to Sky...

Can't see that many moving over, so they've s**t out on alot of money.

Stupid Murdock

(I know I work for them... doesn't mean I love the company thou lol)

not really, im with virgin and wont be switching, dont like how sky have done this, they can feck off

Hahaha.
Silly silly Virgin Media.

Or Sky, depending at how you look at it.

I'm pleased Branson has taken a stand and not been shafted by Sky on this one. Apparently the money they wanted was ridiculous considering there has been a significant ans steady decline in viewers from Sky One in particular over the past few years.

The advertising campaign by Sky (broadcast to Cable customers) urging Cable customers to complain was ridiculous and rightly is being investigated by OFCOM.

Sky are also pulling all channels from Freeview later this year, they are going to offer Premium Services instead (at a cost obviously), so much for Freeview! They've not yet announced prices.

We are sticking with Virgin anyway, never had a problem with the phone/broadband/TV package we've had since day one with Telewest. The free Teleport service on the TV is fantastic, good to see Virgin are massively expanding this to approx 6000 hours of content soon.

They've secured a few good deals anyway with other companies such as HBO...

At the end of the day its nothing really lost, as all the stuff on there, eg lost, 24 etc can all be found on the net before it even gets broadcast here, and with just about everyone having broadband, theres no need to wait for sky to broadcast it... saves on the s**t adverts aswell, that annoys me so much.

I'm not too fussed either, although I'm now not getting the channels I originally signed up for - a bit of compensation wouldn't go amiss.

Gone here too and I agree with Brun, Sky can feck off. They'd have been sure that VM would cave in when they first started to make stupid cash demands and now they've been left looking stupid.

  Better than yours. C*nt.
I'd say it's Virgin Media that are losing here, not Sky.

How much does your current cable package cost you? I know I pay just shy of a tenner for my Sky if I like and I get all the channels I want to watch (I go to the pub to watch football, and cinema to watch films) and I get it somewhere other than in the city...

My colleagues at work have cable, they've all ditched it and gone to Sky...

As off as it is, doesn't change the fact that Sky is much better than NTL, the boxes\menu's etc are a joke, everything takes ages to come up, interactive is a joke. We don't get any of the features on Sky Sports etc. NTL's version of HD is comical. It's just another reason pushing people towards Sky as much as I don't agree with it :S

Don't we get shortchanged on Movie channels too, i'm sure they have an extra one, just little things like that.... remind me again why I have NTL\Virgin :(

Good news today too:

Virgin has confirmed that its top tier of broadband service will be upgraded to a 20Mbps downstream speed across its network by June.

Some limited trials of 20Mbps service have already been undertaken by the cable operator. Virgin's top tier "XL" broadband service currently offers a downstream speed of 10Mbps.

"As an end-to-end network owner, cable has inbuilt advantages in the quality of broadband service that we offer," the company said in its financial results statement today. "Customers can receive consistent speeds no matter where they live on our network and a top speed of 10Mb is available throughout our broadband addressable areas. We will be increasing this to 20Mb in June and we are also currently conducting a residential trial of a 50Mb broadband service."

In your terms and conditions it says they are allowed to make changes to what channels are available at any time, without any prior notice... thats already been discussed on another forum I'm on.

I do not agree that Sky is much better. I used to have Sky+ and I far prefer the V+ box to it. The triple tuner system is far better as are the VOD options which are mainly free on my viewing package.

I love the Broadband package, purchased it as 512k years ago, not paying a penny more but now it's 8MB or something. Love it.

For similar reasons the TV also has potential to be much better than the Sky offering (Teleport is a good start), as I mentioned above the stored content is being increased to 6000 hours soon.

I figured they'd be covered from a legal point of view, I heard a report tonight though that said they would consider compensation on an individual basis? I think it was BBC.

ok. im REALLY confused. sorry if im being stupid...

im with telewest right.. but i noticed in the last few weeks it says virgin on the homepage of the telly.

take it that means virgin bought over telewest?

but sky refused to subscribe their channels to virgin, this leaving me now with no SKY ONE?

  Monaco 172 2/468
What options do old NTL customers get regarding all this V+ business, as we still seem to get screwed over :dapprove: The old Telewest guys seem to get stuff first, I presume thats how it's still working.

Sky are limited in terms of VOD, as the only way the boxes can talk back is via a telephone line, whereas the cable boxes just use the same method as the modems, so they get less latency when pausing etc.

Sky also have to buy transponder space from Astra (the people who send the satellites up and maintain the link) so to supply VOD they'll have to get more space on the satellites, whereas with cable, its all done at the headend, on their own equipment.

The cost of transponder space won't be cheap, so the customer will incure that cost in some form

sky may be a rip off but its got the best content and choice, especially for HD.

i don't blame sky tbh, its their channel, they can do what they want with it, if its a big pull and they are losing customers then they will use it to get them back, they spend a hell of a lot of money on shows like lost and 24, they have the right to do what they want.

Fair enough, but isn't creating adverts specifically broadcast to Cable customers urging them to complain to Virgin a little ridiculous?

By all accounts the offer available to Virgin isn't remotely linked to the viewing figures etc that those channels bring in. Sure they have Lost and it cost them a lot of money, but viewing figures for that have been in freefall for ages now. I read that less than 1 in 6 people who watched the first series now tune in.

Virgin own a load of channels broadcast on Sky, I don't see them throwing their toys out of the pram and doubling prices.

They are now claiming that they will be losing £60m per annum now that they are not on VM so I cannot really see where this is a great idea for Sky.

the adverts are a little underhanded, yes, its a very american way of doing things.

Aside from the actual money Sky will have lost from the non-renewal from Virgin, they also had to consider that advertising revenues will drop due to automatically losing a shed load of viewers instantly. I'm surprised Sky never caved in the end, but judging by their mission to buy into ITV, I assume their ultimate goal is a monopoly on digital TV.

VM have released a press release:

Hello,

If you're wondering whats happened to your basic Sky channels, read on to find out more.

Got Sky Sports or Sky Movies?
Then you can relax, these services are not affected. So you can keep enjoying them - just as you've always done.

What's happened to the basic channels?
- As you may have heard, we've spent the last few weeks trying to make sure that all of Sky's channels remain on Virgin Media.
- But Sky asked us to pay such an unrealistically high price that keeping them would mean asking you to pay the kind of increase that is simply unfair.
- We refuse to stand by and see our customers get ripped off.
- So thanks to Sky, some of their non-premium channels, like Sky One and Sky News have disappeared from our service.

Freeview customers set to lose channels too
Virgin Media customers are not the only people to feel the brunt of Sky's bullying tactics. Freeview customers are affected, too. Sky announced that it will be removing its channels from the Freeview service before the summer.

So what are we going to do?
At Virgin Media we stand up for our customers, making sure you get a better deal and giving you more.

Get more back
We're going to give the money saved back to you in the form of even more of your favourite TV shows and films to watch whenever you want. For example, HBO will be joining the our on demand service in April with some great series including The Sopranos, Band of Brothers and Six Feet Under.
Watch the best shows for free

We've launched Virgin Central, our new free service on channel 119, which includes:

- Nip/Tuck
- The O.C.
- Spooks
- Grey's Anatomy

They all start and stop at whatever time you say so. We'll be adding heaps more, too. Just flick to channel 119 and take a look.
The very best in film, music and TV at your beck and call

The good stuff doesn't stop there. We've got over 500 films, 1000s of music videos and hundreds of other great TV shows at your beck and call, too – all through our on demand service.
Worried about losing Lost?

We're planning to add all 3 series of Lost to our revolutionary on demand service. Series 1 and 2 will be available soon and series 3 is coming your way later this year. What's more, since they're all available on demand, they'll be ready for you to watch anytime you like. Watch one, watch them all, back to back – without the ads.

Virgin Media is the only place to get these ground-breaking services and we want to put you in control.

I didn't realise we lost Sky News too, thats sh!t :( I actually tuned into that channel 119 randomly last night and watched The Office xmas specials, which was good, but the films etc are going to have to be good to compensate for this :dapprove:

I wonder if Freeview will lose Sky Sports News too, thats all I use really on my box, I hope not !

Rupert Murdoch is an evil man, and should be stopped...mwahha ha ha.....
Seriously though, i never watched Sky 1, as by the time they air shows Im intested in, I have seen them 6th months previous, due to my super fast 10mb VM broadband!
Skys argument is that they commission their own shows etc.....what like dream team? The biggest pile of drivel Ive had the pleasure not to see....

I wonder if Freeview will lose Sky Sports News too, thats all I use really on my box, I hope not !

It will indeed, it hasnt been well publicised by Sky are pulling the plug on all of their Freeview channels. They are replacing them with a Pay TV package.

That bit alone is music to my ears!

From DigitalSpy:

Virgin Media has renamed some of the channels previously home to Sky's now-departed basic channels.

Shortly after 1am, channel 602 - the former home to Sky News - was renamed "Sky Snooze try BBC". Channel 515, formerly Sky Sports News, was given the name "Old Sky Sports Snooze."

Both channels carried a message from Virgin:

"Thanks to Sky, some of the non-premium Sky channels, like Sky One and Sky News are no longer available. They've picked up their ball and gone home.

"We believe that Sky want to limit your choice and force consumers into switching service.

"At a time when Sky are taking content away, Virgin Media is standing up for consumers, making sure you get a better deal and giving you more. More films. More TV. More control. All through our on demand service."

Channel 120, meanwhile, initially still showed programme data for Sky One but carried the name "Virgin Central 2," a reference to Virgin's on demand channel on channel 119. A rolling promo appeared shortly thereafter highlighting Virgin Central along with the scrolling message:

"Thanks to Sky, the Sky One channel is no longer available. They've picked up their ball and gone home. Foul play? We think so."
