Jamie's boosted flamer

Think its time to start a project thread for my latest Clio project!

Leading on from my previous 182 that I sold to buy a house I ended up missing the Clio sport life and shortly after selling the bean I ended up buying this Flamer for £550. My original inferno project thread can be seen here: jamies-boosted-bean.707350

Anyway long story short, Ive had a few cars in between coming back to the Clio sports! After selling the 182 turbo I bought this sexy little DCI80 for £300 with a pumped gearbox. Whacked a gearbox and clutch in it and I was away. 2 years and 42,000 miles later I still think its the best car I've ever had! I loved it! It was the cheapest car ever to run, it did everything I ever asked of it. It towed trailers, it carried bikes, it was a van whilst I renovated my house, it would take 2.4m lengths of wood, took me to france and back on holiday and it did all of that at 60mpg! Loved that wee car! Ended up selling it for £700 in the end as well! Winner!

IMG_9468.JPG

My friend was selling his inferno cheap. By this time my house was finished and I was looking for something a bit more sporty and exciting to drive. He sold it to me cheap so bought it off him and ran about in it for a while. Again, sold it for more than I bought it for so was all good!

IMG_9970.JPG

After I sold the inferno I bought an 2.0TFSI A4 . Worst car i've ever owned, I hated it and couldn't wait to get rid of it. It just continuously broke, mainly just stupid little electrical things that as soon as you fixed one thing, something else would stop working. Knowing that it was just a stop gap car, I really begrudged spending any money on it. Plus the fact i'd gone from getting 60+ MPG the audi would be lucky if it got 25MPG. It wasn't even quick or exciting either to make up for it. Gladly got rid of it as soon as I could get the flamer on the road!

Anyways enough of the background - Onto the good s**t and the reason we are here! The new Clio project!

Bought it for £550 quid as if had a few niggles but mainly it was cheap because it had a bad oil leak and the owner couldn't be bothered trying to fix it. The drive back didn't go to well with the under tray half breaking off so had to stop and rip it off.

IMG_7705.JPG

IMG_7708.JPG

Dropped it off at my mates unit to leave it there for a bit. dropped it off an headed home, only to get a call a wee while later from my mate to say that the car had set itself on fire and he'd had to put it out lol. No damage was done though, thankfully he was there an noticed it early!

IMG_7709.JPG

We managed to sort the oil leak very easily - turned out to be a missing exhaust stud! Put a new stud in it and it didn't drop another bit of oil! happy days!

It still had a few months MOT on it so I ran about in it for a while until the MOT ran out and then I put it away in my unit whilst I was renovating the house. The plan was always to turbo it so after the house was done I started collecting the bits fit it. I um'd and aw'd for ages about whether to go for a cheap chinese turbo or just go all out and get a garrett. I went for a garrett and I'm glad that I did.

To be continued.....

Sadly it was suffering from some rear sills being knackered. They were OK when I bought it, but sitting in my cold damp unit for a long while I think was the nail in the coffin. Anyways, cut out all 3 layers of the sill and welded in some new metal, didn't bother making it too pretty as its going to be a track car and also it will be behind the side skirt.

Once the shitty jobs were sorted I started on the fun stuff. So me an a mate pulled the engine out and took it across to a friend to have new Heat gasket, timing belt, water pump etc as well as doing an aircon and PS delete at the same time.

IMG_0650.jpg
IMG_0651.jpg
IMG_0657.jpg

Once that was done, we drilled the oil return and added the turbo and re-fitted the engine. Got all the intercooler pipework etc done and wired in the AEM ECU. and then we were ready for the first start up, which was quite nerve-racking as my "cheap project" hadn't turned out so cheap at this point...

IMG_0710.jpg

I've attached a video of the first start up and you can literally see the moment my mate s***s himself hahaha!!

Once the engine was back in and we had it running I got it booked in to make the trip from Edinburgh to EFI in Runcorn to get it mapped on the 29th May.

We had a few small issues with getting it to run right including a starting/immobiliser issue. We finally got it sorted and ended up taking it for its MOT on the 15th of May which is failed on which was worrying, anyways managed to get it sorted and it passed its MOT on the 27th.... which was a little closer than I had hoped as it had a base map so I had wanted to drive it around for a bit as a shake down before taking it down for mapping.. but that didn't happen.

So me and a mate made the 250 mile trip down south with a couple of intermittent misfire issues on the way down which worried me. However, we made it! Stuck it on the rollers. Chris asked me what I was hoping for an I said 230-240 was what the old one made and I would be pleased with that. I said I didn't want to push it too far. Anyways it made 250bhp which I'm delighted with!

He said we were lucky to make it there as it was "knocking its face off" as he so elegantly put it haha! It wasn't a misfire that we intermittently had it was the engine going into limp mode as some form of knock protection. The base map that was on the ECU that i bought was WAYYYY off! But never mind - the engine survived the drive down, the hammering on the rollers and the drive back!

IMG_1056.jpg

It drives so well, I am dead pleased with it!

That just about brings us up to date.

Ive since fitted a whittling rear ARB, some GAZ GHA's with the stiffest springs, some Sparco rev bucket seats and just today ive fitted my new Pro race 3's with pilot sport 3's. It is going to be a track car but as its primarily a road car just now I thought I would stick with PS3's just now!

I've got an EPAS setup to fit to see if I like it.

I love these wee cars. This one really needs a proper alignment now but its getting there! Need to start saving up for a diff I think and that will finish it off nicely!

IMG_1612.jpg
IMG_1503.jpg

Also temp fitted some gauges until I get a dash top panel. The temp seems to under read as it never gets about 70 degrees and the pressure seems to over read as cold it sits about 75/80PSI which can't be correct!
IMG_1755.jpg
IMG_1751.jpg
IMG_1870.jpg

Also on the lookout for a cage (Probably just a rear half cage), some harnesses and a new steering wheel.

In between finishing this I've also managed to pick up a daily which i've been hunting for for ages.

A LCI E91 330D. Its a great car and really enjoying it! It was a right drama picking it up... but that's a story for another day!

Updates might be slow as I'm now skint lol

The car as it stand just now - it aint no show car but its not bad for 19 years old and 116,000 miles!

Have a pic of the daily too:

Thanks Everyone. Not sure what's next after the EPAS. Probably just a 4 wheel alignment and enjoy it for a bit during the summer!

Some of them are quite sound I suppose... lol

Few wee updates from the last few weeks.

Got the EPAS setup fitted. Seems ok from my initial few weeks driving about.

This weekend I fitted my new Targa steering wheel and lowered/adjusted the seat. Think I’m going to get a steering wheel spacer and also try and lower the column a little bit to get it to feel a bit better.

Also stuck on a sunstrip..... because racecar lol

Well much like a lot of other folks I’m using this lockdown to get various bits and pieces done on the car.

First up was to install some aerocatches onto the bonnet. Not a particularly pleasant job but it went well none the less!

I also fitted some MTC coolant hoses which allowed me to move my turbo water feed and return from the thermostat housing to the join between the heater matrix. I also installed a new coolant bottle. I need to flush it through a few more times before I fill with type D as it’s just got water in it just now and you can see how orange it’s gone!!

Next up was to fit some bumper attachment devices. Went for some rubber bandy things on the outside corners and push button poppers in the middle.

Also took the time to spray the front grill and fog light surrounds which tidied the front end up a little bit as the grill was really blue before.

Removed some more of the interior trim as well. Next up it to start removing all the sound deadening which I’m not looking forward to at all!

I’ve also bought some Sabelt harnesses. I’m keeping an eye out for a second hand safety devices R022 cage coming up for sale at reasonable money!

Dull day today spent scraping 8.77KG’s of sound deadening out of the car.

Still need to work out how to remove the rest of the stickyness!

Also whilst I had the heat gun out I took a few minutes to remove the Renault sport badge...

Once lockdown is over I’m hoping to tidy up interior wiring and paint the interior to make it all a bit neater!

Nice work, my flamer was too faded to get away with removing the badges sadly

Decided to have a shot at making a fiberglass foot rest/tray.

I had pretty much everything left over from fiberglassing my garage roof so decided it was worth a shot!

First up was to make a mould out of MDF

6b08313c2adfba2ccb08d4be40abb612.jpg

Next up was to lay a couple layers of fiberglass into the mdf mould to form the mould.

6cbd4589ce820e01da14952f372a0790.jpg

After that put 4 layers of Mould release wax on it and then laid a further 3 layers of fiberglass into the mould.

Turn out that I maybe could of done with a bit more mould release wax as it wasn’t easy to get out the mould but I managed.

Quite pleased with the results. Still need to sand and paint and will then put some grip tape on it and fix it into the car.

Going to make a passenger foot plate as well using the same process!

Not really much to report. Progress has slowed now that I’m back to work.

Managed to get the foot plate painted, just need to get it bolted into the car and then apply some grip tape in the correct location.

Also got the roll cage in with a little help from the feline friend! Also got the seats and harnesses fitted.

Taken it for a wee blast and it is very good fun! Can’t wait for restrictions to be further lifted so I can take it for a proper drive!

Been a while since the last update but the cars had a few more bits and pieces done to it.

I bought a PRO-AM racing roll centre kit on a black Friday deal which I just fitted last week. Nice bit of kit and looks to be nicely machined and everything fitted together well. Took the opportunity to remove the hubs and wishbones and slap a bit of paint on them to tidy them up and press in a pair of new wheel bearings whilst they were off! Also chucked in some black powerflex wishbone bushes and some new tie rods at the same time.

I also fitted the PMS shifter and M Factory diff’d gearbox out of the PH1 I’m breaking. No photos of either of them but we all know what a PMS shifter and a gearbox look like [emoji276]

Took the car for an alignment on weds morning. Was very surprised how straight the rear beam is!

328db1aa66b7e69a1289f054f7128f7b.jpg

Then last night I managed to get out on track at Knockhill for my first ever track day.

What an evening, it was so much fun and the car was fantastic!

The evening started with some pretty heavy rain and some hailstones which made me a bit apprehensive but after the first last I was feeling much more comfortable knowing there was a lot more grip than I thought there would be!

By lap 3 I was going quick enough for my drivers side windscreen wiper to come flying off at the exit of the second corner [emoji23] was raging, they were brand new on Sunday.... must of been poorly fitted by someone! Then I had the shame/reminder of it as I had to drive past it on the edge of the track for the next 2 hours! Nipped into the pits and pinched the wiper off the back of my dads van and away I went again!

Never had any other issues after that apart from the brake pedal starting to get a bit long. I have some better fluid which I never had time to change before the track night so will get that changed before the next one and it should make a big difference.

The diff’d box felt amazing, could really feel it pulling you out of the corners!

That’s me hooked now - will defo be booking some more for this year!

Essential pre track wash:

How was the car handling? Good balance?

Looks like they have taken a lot of toe out, out. Knockhill has some higher speed corners so probably not a bad setup.

You fancy joining us on the hills? Forrestburn should be opening up for track days again soon. It’s dirt cheap at £30-£40 a time.

Saw you just as you turned off the M90 last night and knew where you'd be heading, especially with that wee convoy!

Car looked good from the other side of the motorway at 80 :ROFLMAO:

It actually felt pretty good certainly wasn’t struggling with turn in or mid corner grip but I probably wasn’t going quick enough for setup to be an issue! Lol

Want to get a few more track days under my belt to get used to the car and driving it quickly! Could be tempted in the future though!
