Just bought a 172 cup - handling question

  172cup & 182cup pk'd
Hello
Just bought a 172 cup and the handling is a bit odd, does the car follow dips and cracks in the road - is this normal?

Also, steering vibrates at 70mph - the guy i bought it off said he swapped the front wheels for the back and i'm wandering if the balancing is out.

Cheers
Griff

Think it might be your CV joint, drive salft bent, dose it mack a knocking sound when you hammer it around corners?

Mine did what your saying its doing, but once i had changed it, it was fine.

Yer or its balancing, go for a blast if it makes a knoking noise then 99% sure its your CV join, Drive shalft bent.

No knocking, its go to be the balancing at 70mph i wud imagine. What about the following of the road dips and cracks?

Is the 172 cup known to follow every contour of the road?

Pretty normal to be honest.

Cheers for the advice guys, car also pulls to the left a little when on the motorway. I think its the tracking but not 100% sure.

Can anyone given some recommendations for new tyres, need t i will be putting them on the front as the backs are okay - i will also be getting the tracking done at the same time.

Cheers

Is it worth putting strut braces back and front to improve handling?

If you're planning to take track days seriously then yes. Normal road use - I wouldn't bother.

Nah, don't bother with a rear strut it does bugger all, front strut works alright on the Clio (also improce the look of the engine bay). But before all of that I'd look at upgrading your dampers and springs and having the car in for front tracking.

As for tramlining that's normal - wide tyres/not much weight/precise steering. Also worth checking your tyre pressures I'd suggest 31 front/29 rear.

Pulling to the left slightly is fairly usual too, could just be down to the camber of the road. My 172 did it slightly and thats before and after alignment.

Tyres:

Goodyear GSD3 would be my choice, it's a great all round fast road tyre and they're superb in the wet (much more sure footed and PE2's). Second pick would be Michelin Pilot Exalto 2, and third Yoko Parada Spec 2.

A certain degree of tramlining is normal (as others have said).

I found it got a lot worse on worn tyres - might be part of the problem.

If the tyres are worn on the front you'll be all over the place, a spanking set of PE2's transformed mine!

Tires with more grip tramline more.

Low profile tyres tramline more.

Tyres that are worn down tramline more.

Suspension that's a bit worn and there's a bit of play in the joints and linkages tramline more.

So, yeah, if youi've got a cup that's done a few miles and the tyres are worn down a bit you're likely to experience tramlining.

Sounds normal to me

Normal 172 tramlines a fair bit and you go feel quite 'connected' to the road
