I'd highly recommend getting Apple to do the RAM upgrade - so just buy it from them.
They're a swine to open.. and then once ya in, there ain't much room.
512MB *should* be enough, but if you are planning on using it as a main machine, then 1GB should be minimum. Once you start getting apps open etc.. OSX really does like the extra RAM.
