K-Tec 12k Service - wrong oil?

  Ibis A3 BE
Hi guys,

I had my 12k service at K-Tec Racing today on my 182 Cup. I was hoping that this Renault 'specialist' would offer a more reliable service than the Reanult dealers around and so booked it in.

Got home and looked at the work receipt and they have listed down 10w40 semi-synthetic for the oil change. Now I would have expected them to use 5w40 fully synth. So I called them to check and the guy explained that it was 10w40 but that it will work fine and the only difference is that 5w40 is better for use when the temp drops to below -25c.

Just wondered what you guys think about this?

Thanks for your comments, Rich

10-40 can be used so long as it doesn't drop to -20 degrees then its fine for use.
0-40 or 5-40 or 5-50 covers yu donw as low as -30 degree but if its that cold in the UK I'd have other worries.
0-30 and 5-30m cover down to -20 degrees.

Thanks for your reply edde. So basically the 10w40 semi-synth that I have in my car now will do the same job as a 5w40 fully synth?

Just that most of the threads I've read about oil for the RS Clio's talk about 5w40 fully synth being the right stuff.

Renault recommend 5W-40 now, thats what id use, though 10W-40 will be fine, just probably not ideal

Thanks for your input. As long as it won't be detrimental then I will probably just stick with it then. Not too sure if I have any grounds to make them change it to 5w40 fully synth for free anyway.

Cheers for now, Rich

Is it true once you run a thicker oil for a decent period of time that you should not go back to a thinner one again after or is this an old wives tale?
