K-Tec 172 sports cat - any good?

Car  was 172 Cup now 197
Hi Everyone,

The cat on my 172 cup is going. Its been rattling for a while and is getting worse, I'm sure it is effecting performance now as the car does not seem as responsive and there is quite a lot of vibration coming from that area of the exhaust. I rang Renault about a standard one but it is £350 just for the cat and another £40-£50 for fitting!! Robbing b*stards. I have been looking at the above sports cat and was wondering if anyone has any experience of it before I shell out??

I think it is a Janspeed. As far i am aware they are fine. Hopefully the Cliosport discount will mean the price will be in line with anyone else.

Just cut your cat out and weld a 12" inch long, 2" inch wide pipe inbetween - it will cost you about a tenner. If your car is less than 3 yrs old you dont need to worry about the MOT. When the MOT does come round just buy a 2nd hand 172 cat for £100 and use that every time you need an MOT are reverse another car into the MOT bay when you do the emissions test.

I got my 172 sports cat from Demon Tweeks for just under £300.

The performance/driveability improvement is noticable along with a tad more noise:D

Sorry to say but thats madness paying £300 for a sports cat. Buy a decat for £80 and then just replace with standard coming time of MOT.
But if your a law obiding citizen then i guess a sports cat has to do.

Sports cats are a rip off - its a scam thats gets kids to part with there money because they are under the idea they are getting extra bhp when in fact the extra bhp is already there and just needs unlocking

Some of us (myself included) don't want to pay a grand or so in fines for a failed roadside emissions check, can't be ar**d to change it for MOTs and don't want the extra noise.

Just a matter of preference

What about the other 'scams' such as bling wheels & bodykits?

The legal noise limit on a UK public road for a vehicles exhaust output is 101 decibals and there is no way a decat on a 172 creates this much noise.

I know my (silenced) decat pipe that bb tuning made mine sounds miles louder it still comes under the noise of some of these 4" exhausts floating about. But definately worth in my opinion and the way mine was made both lamba sensors were plugged back in but of course the second one goes into a sealed thread.

which is the best decat to get then guys and prices? do all decats generally fit onto any aftermarket system like magnex etc cheers i would have a sports cat but i can see now it is alot of money for what it is cheers

I dont want a decat because I dont want loads more noise and cant be arsed *****ing around changing it at MOT time. Is there any cheaper options for a normal cat or sports cats so that I dont have to pay Renault £400 for a sub-standard piece of Sh*te??

A decat does not create 'loads more noise'. A MOT can be upto 3 years...not really a pain in the arse.

In terms of best decat...can't be GDI value but also look at Yozzasport.

maybe my last post sounded a bit harsh!! My MOT is due in 3 months and I'd prefer to not to have to change from decat to cat and back so soon + I'd probably make a complete mess of it!

decat, if you take it to a place that does a good job of it it can come on and off very easilly.
AAS in Newcastle did a good job on mine.

Sports cat all the way. It will still give a gain and improve responses even if not quite as dramatically as a decat. Not worth the full price people charge though, my Janspeed was £53 ;) .

Kits and wheels arent sold as performance parts - there down to individual taste

But IMHO still a waste of money...but, as you say, personal preference.
