knowsit, half these people dont know as they sit behind their keyboards all day. Mine was pretty bad, sounded like it was comming from the passenger footwell, and over crests etc,you could sometimes feel it through the steering wheel too(its hitting the rack)

yeah sounds from passenger footwell, rite i think were on the same wavelength here.. so what are we actually doing just tilting the engine forward a bit? and i cant find this dog bone thing on the ktec site, dont suppose u cud get us a link?

can't link it for some reason, but they are called lower engine mount bushes, bottom of the 172 page

tbh i'd just try slackening (sp) the left hand mount bolts off (like i said near the oil cap) and whilst pulling the engine forward, nip em back up. I think its the manifold hitting the bulkhead/subframe etc , but it does sound horrid! Just try that and see how you get on :)

ah yes ive seen them bushes, well im going to get one of these inlet manifolds so will get it looked at when thats been fitted.!

are you pulling the engine forward at the top? so basically just changing the angle of it

I'm not a self proclaimed car expert, but before you spend your hard earned at least get a mate to look at the car from the outside when you spin the wheels to see if the wheels 'hop'. It will be easy to see if they do.

  An orange one
i had this on my old cup, took it to renault they knew right away..adjusted the manifold away from the subframe..job done..spin as much as you like as smooth as you like then!

easy fix this!!!! its the engine hitting the subframe/ and or steering rack, not axel tramp etc

i sorted mine by getting the uprated k tec dog bone mount.... and then slacken off the 4 bolts on the left hand engine mount (the one near the oil cap lol) pull the engine forward with the help of a bar/mate then re tigthen the bolts. Job done, mine never does this now, no mater how much right foot is given in 1st

Worked for me!

Thanks a lot :star:

JACKO CUP 172!

i have put a few threads up about this knocking noise..but every 1 just says it is engine mounts!! i will have to try adjusting the engine..

  Polo GTi
how you finding the Cup over all?!!!

Its great im loving it, it different than the Williams as its standard, so its quiet, and does plenty of miles for the money, its a very similar drive, the knocking was worrying me at first, but that was something and nothing.

  BMW M3
Ive just skimmmed over this so i might have missed something.

Mine does this too. I did think it was axle tramp at first or engine mounts etc..... but what i dont get is if i turn off the ESP, and wheelspin on purpose, is very smooth and create loads of smoke etc. I dont purposly wheelspin like chavs, but have pulled out a few blind junctions which require serious power if a car is coming, and in the wet in bounces all over the place if im too heavy with the go pedal.... then turn off esp and the tyres just light up.

Dont get it ! Maybe the vibration of the engine speed slowing down with esp triggers the bounce.

i read the post lastnite and my 172 does it i tried GT gaz's sollution (without the k-tec dogmount) worked a treat cheers mate

  M2 Competition
They all do it, its the wheels gaining and losing grip when it wheelspins, which appears as a juddering in the car.

  mk4 golf gttdi180
its the drive shafts im a mechanic and i had it happen on my clio mk2 phs1 replace the hole shaft and it will be allright if it goes when your driving it will make you crash

Theres the 2 sorts of noise, ones a knocking which comes from the engine bay which is what the gaz fix sorts out, the other is from the tyres loosin grip what they all do..

" oddly enough the more power you have the less this happens as the wheels just break traction without jumping... "

This explains why it doesnt happen when i wheel spin on purpose. It usually happens when the car is rolling a bit and there is just a little too much power, but not loads.

If you wanna see a perfect example of Axle Tramp watch the car chase in Bullitt.

There's a bit when Steve overcooks it on one particular turn and has to reverse the Mustang up. He spins up the rears and you can see the left rear hopping up and down as he does it....great bit of film.

This guy is right ^^, I could get both noises if I belted it, I know the knocking I was having wasn't the tyres jumping even though they were, my Wiliams does it, its just the wheels trying to grip, the mount noise is different, this axle tramp stuff bangs from the whole front end where as my mount problem seemed like it was coming from the pass side more than the whole front of the car.

I can now accellerate full beans with NO banging at all. Unless I wheelspin, but I have pedal control so this doesnt happen ;)

I could get the noise in the dry at around 5k revs 2nd gear, the wheels didnt loose traction.

For the 2 mins it takes to adjust the mount its worth trying it to see if it improves, it was the last thing I'd tried

i still need to do this like haha, ill have a go tomorrow! what did you use to get the engine leaning forward? a bar or bit or 3x2 or sommat.. as it naturally sits back... take it its a 2 man job?

  Polo GTi
I did it on my own fella, undo the 4 bolts slack, dont take them off, and I wedged a crow bar inbetween the mount and strut and gently levered it forward, to be honest I could of done it with my hands by just pulling the enegine forward, mine just stayed in place while i redid the bolts back up, but the bar was by my side, I pulled the engine as far forward as it goes.

you can see its moved a decent distance on this pic, from where the bolts used to be.

I knew it was something to do with this mount. My car never used to get this banging from the passenger footwell (bulkhead) untill i had the cambelt done. The mount needs to come off for it to be replaced.... then it started. It was then obvious it just needed adjusting.

  BMW M3
Strangely enough... it was my plan today to fix this problem today and then this thread popped up again..... anyone know the socket size i need to shift the 4 bolts.... think ill need the extended socket. Thanks
