Knocking

Hi all

Im getting a strange knocking noise from my car when in reverse.

I havent a clue what it is as it only happens sometimes, and there doesnt seem to be a set way of triggering it. Also, sometimes it doesnt knock, it just sounds like a rubbing coming from the passenger side. Im not sure if they are related but they never seem to happen together. The knocking can be felt through the pedals and heard clearly.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be?? Or any tests i could try to narrow it down a bit :)

Thanks

Dazz

Its fairly loud, i can normally hear it faintly over the radio and feel the vibrations from it.

Brakes dont seem to have any effect, and i normally only reverse after ive been driving a bit, so hot :)

BTW, at its last MOT the garage advised that there is apparently (i cant see anything) a leak on the near side shock, could this have anything to do with it?

Many thanks

Dazz

How long does the knocking sound for, all the time you are in reverse for that time or for a couple of seconds?

I guess about half the time im reversing, it will sometimes knock then be fine, then knock again and then be ok and then il stop. The last time it knocked i put it in neutral and then put it back in to reverse but still the same problem.

The one place it seems to knock is when i park on my drive. I come down the hill, swing out into the road, and then steer the wheel right (to reverse left) onto my drive. Also, it normally rubs when i park up at college. This is similar to the above except its on the flat and im reversing to the right.

Also, it sometimes knocks a little bit when reversing in a straight line.

Thanks

Just took it down my local garage, they had a good look around and the only things they said they could see was the leaky shock, and some rust on the disk brake. I guess the rust on the disk brake could cause the rubbing noise in reverse??

Also, another problem that could be related is that i sometimes have trouble getting it into first. Im thinking the it could be the clutch as if its not going into reverse properly some of the clogs/teeth might be slipping causing the banging sometimes?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Dazz

PS how much would i be looking at for a new shock? and should i replace both?

Okey dokey, how much do you reckon a couple of new shocks will be?

Does it matter on what make you buy if the car hasnt been lowered, or should i opt for some better performance ones to ease the ride and increase reliability?

BTW, Ben J, is there anyway of checking what you suggest, what should i look for? some sort of chain?

Thanks

dazz - go under ya car. next to ya cat or decat youll see the gear link bar, u cant miss it. get someone to sit in ya car and put the box into reverse (engine off obviously) - youll see it move, see how close it is and if it has movement on it. mine knocked after having a de-cat and i had a bit of the de-cat bracket blown off - now fine
