Laptop CD/DVD Drive broken...booting from external drive?

Hi,

My sony vaio laptop's cd drive has given up on me and basically needs replacing.

I really need to format my HD badly as it's running well slow. Is it possible to boot from an external cd drive which would be connected via USB?

yes via the bios bit

you'll get new one from ebay cheap as chips, my vaio uses a toshiba drive i think

I've been looking all over for a replacement but cant find any info.

Any ideas where I could look... I have a PCG FR415B

Otherwise I'll get an external drive and use that.

i've got a dell and it's dead easy to take apart - best bet is try and find a guide on the net if you can.
