You dont need to drop the whole subframe dude. Drop the strut off the passenger side, undo the 2 subframe bolts that side and the 2 support brackets then just loosen the drivers side a couple of turns and lever the subframe down. It'll feel like you're bending it but its fine. Drop it about a foot or so and the box just fits through the gap.
Thats the way I did it and others have too. Saves the hassle when the captive bolts spin after a few turns, because they will.
they're not proper captives, they're just a nut with a spring clip. If you break the clip and rip it out (5 mins a side tops) you can get a spanner on the nut
