Car  Not a Clio


Whats it like to use daily? I spend most of my time crawling through town, looking at traffic lights.

Ive not driven one yet or even been inside one, how are they for space?

MPG around town?

Anything else useful?


In my head at the moment its either a Y2000 172 or Y2000+ 2.2 CD Auto Omega. (I know they are very different cars)
 


On an average weeks commuting ill get 38mpg. Space? well its a Clio! Not bad in the front, but I wouldnt want to sit in the back to often!
 


Space wise, do you know how it compares to a 1.8 16v? I couldnt go back to anything that small inside im afraid. I like my space!
 


Im thinking a 172 maybe my next car in about a years time

maybe anyway, not sure yet, prices will be good by then so can get a bargain :-)
 


And your a moderator on a Clio forum?! ;)

I guess its not bad, its a small car after-all. Theres a bit of a difference in the 2 cars youve chosen!
 


Commute from Cannock to Birmingham gets me around 32mpg, the same as the 172 and 182 did.

In really heavy traffic I sometimes wish it had a lighter clutch, like when I get a 1.2 courtesy car but other than that its a nice place to be sat.

Plenty of space in the front, feels bigger than it is, very little in the rear though.
 


theres a garage on the way to my parents that has one in at the moment (closest to me), if they still have it in at the weekend ill got and take a look.

Being a mod doesnt mean im all knowing ;)

lot of difference between a 172 and an Omega lol At the moment the Omega is winning.

The Omega is my sensible head... plenty of room for the family, very comfortable drive and insurance isnt too bad.
Very cheap for what you get.

Yup, my old man used to have one, massive old tanks, shed loads of room in them.

As for living with the Clio, if youre worried about space then dont bother with one, its not too bad on local journeys in the back but anything more than a few miles is a nightmare.
 


IMO the back of the clio is no good for Adults, thats always been its major weakness (hence the new people carrier type Clio III)

Just a bit bizarre your on a Renault Clio site then?

The difference between the 2 cars youve chosen is huge, is there a reason? Maybe the best solution would be to choose something thats both practical (the Omega) and sporty (172), for instance a Leon Cupra is quick yet practical.
 


i own one and the only thing thats annoying is the slighty stiff steering at low speeds, the slightly naff turning circle, and the very hard clutch pedal makes crawling pants and the low end torque is naff so smooth starts i.e lifting clutch and applying gas are not really possible as the bite point is really high and you end up giving it a bit too much throttle so you dont stall or jump into the car infront.

so town driving is sh*te. imo of course.

when you get going it doesnt matter about anything like that, but you will find yourself going fast quite alot.
 


i dont believe there are any cupras in my price range. Im looking at £6k maximum.

As to why im here.... Ive had 2 Clios, (mk1 1.2 & mk1 1.8 16v) one whilst being a member here. Is that ok with you?

I would get a Clio 172. Fantastic fun little car, always brought a smile to my face. A car for the true Clio enthusiast.

Maybe you need to work out your right leg a bit more;), ive never had any of these problems. Yes the clutch is a little heavier, but not so you cant control the car.
 


If you need more space in the back than a clio, and you want a renault badge on the front of it, why not try a Megane Scenic?

Bags of space in there.
 


cant be heavier than a valver clutch can it? I still walk funny due to the over developed muscles in my left leg ;)
 


Believe Omegas cost quite a bit if they go wrong. My mate has recently changed from an Omega (he was a big car person) - to a 172. I know which one he enjoys driving most! If you do a lot of town driving (like I do) - then a hot hatch like the 172 is ideal. What with all the speed cameras - its not about top speeds/cruising. The only way you can make real progress round town is to get to the front at the lights (even if its not really the lane you want) and to be (pretty) sure you can be the first away.

The Omega is a big lump of metal to get moving...and although they can shift, itll DRINK fuel. If you were doing lots of motorway work Id say the Omega was in contention, but for the town, small and nippy wins!



Re: space in the back - I had two mates sat in my 182 on the way to/ back from Luton last week ...and the space wasnt even mentioned.

Its a vauxhall, nothing majorly expensive on it to break and i dont mind getting my hands dirty.

Fuel economy is better than my Astra GSi... i think most modern cars will be lol

Small and nippy in stafford makes no difference, when the traffic is backed up you arent going anywhere, no matter what you drive!

I need a test drive!

If you decide on the Omega, make sure on inspection you check the boot for the Rug, slippers and pipe and you get a travel card for the 2 tube stops from the bonnet to the boot. ;) Im a small man and big cars look ridiculous with me driving, id never go above megane/golf sized cars.

Get the 172.
 


I was the opposite, I went from a C Class Merc to a 172, cos I was fed up with huge service costs, and running a big car.. I hardly ever have passengers or need the boot-space, plus a 20 mile round trip each day down the lanes makes it a perfect work horse.
 


well ill test drive a 172 and see what i think.

Im getting on a bit now so pipe, slippers and a comfy sofa are appealing.

Im 37 and still think Ive got years of fun driving left!!! :devilish:

An Omega will actually make you look older...its a scientific fact. You mention the kids...I bet I know what theyd rather be seen in :D
