The throttle body is on the underneath of that plastic inlet maifold there easy to get off. the rag is possibly stuck in there and when u switched it off it didnt close and the injection system reads it everytime thus this is very the idle might be low/stuck

See the black inlet manifold ontop of your engine (where the 1.2 engine cover should be) you have to lift that off and your throttle body is there.

I just lagged meself.

My mate used a sock while he cleaned his air filter before. Got a phone call about 5 minutes after he left asking for tools to remove his sock from the inlet manifold. Not even a new one neither, he'd been wearing it all day

On the sports you really dont take the cam cover off as it causes untold pain with the cam followers etc...cant say if this is the case on the 1.2 or not as its a little different. See the picture ive attached. Basically you need to get to the Throttle Body. This looks like this:

That valve that appears closed it probably stuck with your cloth. You need to concentrate on this area marked with red circles.

thanks very much mate, so basically its near the induction? or is it underneath the inlet manifold once removed? ive been trying to take it apart but we cant seem to take the manifold/plenum off...

how do you remove the coils? i think the wires are stopping me from removing it.

Buy a Haynes manual with the money you saved from buying a filter ;)

Only just seen this, FMPSL!

Have you used white cloth, sprayed it but and ended up getting some paint on the engine?

Best of luck though! Sounds like it's probably wedged in the TB

J03

  MX5 1.8
yeah mate, the spray was basically a dirt trap spray... sticks to grease and that... yeah its most likley to be wedged there, i just need confirmation where its directly located as people saying its there and there...

TB is BEFORE the inlet manifold. When you push your peddle the TB opens up and lets air into the inlet manifold. So you really shouldnt be taking that off. Just get to the throttle body which should be very close to where the air filter connects to, and when i say close i mean inches. Simple FOLLOW where the air would of gone from where the cloth first was and you will get the TB, whioch should be visible once the black casing is removed. Are you local to bedfordshire?

no am not local mate, btw is the TB at the back where the ECU wires are?? bear in mind this is a 1.2 engine we're talking about. people say its near the inlet manifold, then its near the induction/air filter area... am so confused

The pic with the arrows shows it perfectly......

The air goes into the filter/cloth, then left down a pipe towards the throttle body. You can see how far down the throttle body is height/position wise on the back of the engine by looking at the level/height the pipe is at thats leading to it.

IIRC to get to the throttle body, you have to take that back cover off, which is attached to the inlets.... the black square thing, then the throttle body will be under there.

The air goes through the throttle body, then upwards into the inlets on these engines i think, so that HAS to come off to make the throttle body visable.

Try sticking a wire coat hanger down there with a hook? U might be able to yank it out?

thanks for the replies, ive looked inside theres nothing in there but another hole.. we couldnt completley remove the plenum because the coilpack wires were holding it down, but as far as we could tell it wasnt in that chambre, the TB wasnt in there too...

only way you'l be able to investigate it further is by unplugging the coils, undoing the inlet and lifting it off, then go from there.....

Agh!

Unplug your leads, take the inlet off and Robert's your Father's Brother.

What's so hard? :S
