Looking at buying a Clio 200 cup, any tips for a newbie?

  Clio RS 200 (2010)
Hi all, been looking to get a new car for ages and think I've decided on Clio.
Took a 200 cup out for a spin today and it was great fun.

I've been looking at 2010/11 models. Is there anything that I need to be looking out for, common faults etc? I don't know anyone that's ever owned one so I'm going in blind.

Any info would be great!

Thanks

I have owned 2 200s now but both were from new. The biggest problem with them seems to be gearboxes. I never had any issues with either of mine but if you google it you will see its a pretty common problem. Keep an ear out for crunching when changing gears. The small rubber strips behind the doors that sits in the leading edge of the rear windows tend to perish very easily, mine were replaced after 10k. Check tyre wear as there have been a few issues with tracking on some cars, due to the stiffness of the ride the tracking can be put out by large potholes. The earliest 200s will be coming up for their first belt changes soon so if you go for a 2009 model or even a 2010 it might be worth factoring that into the cost of the car.

If you can save a little more i would suggest going for a 200 with the cup pack as you will get all the luxuries like aircon, keyless entry, auto lights... plus they just look nicer with the colour coded side trim and black bezels in the headlights. Recaro's are also a must, totally change the feel of the car.

Good luck looking for a car.

Don't get a cup

look for a standard car with the cup suspension

The best way to tell is the plastic bump strips on the doors and the plastic wing mirror covers on the cup. The standard cars have colour coded bump strips and gloss black wing mirror covers.

The syncros on the gearboxes go, so make sure there is no crunch when driving enthusiastically. People say to check for a crunch above 5k between 3rd and 4th.

bolsters wear, so look for one that isn't ripped.

desirable options to have are

climate control (digital screen on the dash)
rs monitor (monitor on top of the dash)
cup chassis (red brakes and anthracite wheels)
recaro seats
projector headlights could only be retrofitted afaik.
Bluetooth (look for 'tel' on the CD player)

speedline wheels

cup spoiler (can be fitted to standard boot lid)
gt spoiler (this requires a different boot lid, so if you want one... Be aware you can't retrofit one)

renaultsport side skirts.

desirable colours are

liquid yellow
alien green
Storm grey

there are special editions too which come with a lot of options as standard

silverstone (50 made, silver with black Speedlines and leather iirc recaros)
raider (50 made iirc, comes in matte grey or matte red. Has the wheels off the Megane r26.r and full leather recaros)
gordini (don't bother with these)

I'm sure there are more but I forget which

Ha, i know! I'm a little worried about the stain on the passenger seat, on the plus side if I shake all the crap off the mat there's probably going to be enough weed for a joint or two!

There's not many to pick from when it comes to standard 200's with the cup package, not close by for me anyway. Might need to go the extra distance to find the right one.

Thanks for the reply, will keep you all updated on my progress. Itching to get in one now!

I didn't realise you were local. But I'd definately recommend travelling for one.

I wouldnt pay pay that price for the above one

it may not matter to you but I thought 'I want the best I can if I'm spending this much', which is why I looked around for a while to get on with all the options I wanted.

have you considered 197s? The r27 model comes with recaros and cup chassis as standard, then you just need to find one with the climate control and xenons.

there was a red 200 in Cheshire oaks Lexus. I'm not sure if it's still there though as their site isn't working

Definitely worth traveling for the right one, I looked at loads local to me but didn't have what I wanted. Mine came up and jumped at the chance, I traveled 8 hours but well worth it.

I kind of need to get something within the next 2-3 weeks, which might limit my options a bit but hopefully I can get something that fits the bill.

Knuckles, after looking around I think you're right about the price on that one. It's newer (just) than the ones I've been looking at but doesn't really justify the extra cost.

Thanks guys, looks like I'll be going for a drive on Monday :D

Recaroa, cup chassis, looks like retrofitted Bluetooth, rs monitor or sat nav

Projector headlights came as optional extra as long as the cornering lights box was ticked. Can be retro fitted but won't have the cornering lights capability just the projectors.

Also got the option to take it for less cash and get the work done myself which might be better. Don't think I can bring myself to trust a used car salesman

Which ever car you go for, make sure the belts have been done by a specialist, or get them done by a specialist.

Personally I would give that one a miss, for the reasons stated above and it seems too cheap for the age. Dealers tend to prove based on age ime, I'll have a proper look when I get in though as I'm darting past traffic (on foot) trying to read the ad

  Clio 200 Cup
I bought a glacier white 2010 car in Nov 2013. 'Proper' cup car (badge on side of doors) so no air con, bluetooth, other toys etc. The lack of air con has not bothered me yet (windows down so you hear the awesome engine more and turn the stereo up).

What it has got are the black speedline alloys which look monumentally fvcking brilliant and the stupendously amazing recaro seats. I would strongly recommend persevering and looking further afield for a car with the cup suspension ('proper' cup car or a 'full fat' model with the cup suspension added as an option) and the recaros because they are extremely comfortable (6 hours up to the Lakes with no back pain at all), hold you in place during spirited cornering and also look great.

When you test drive it, once it is up to temperature, accelerate hard in 3rd gear from 4500 rpm up to the limiter then change up to 4th. Check that everything sounds ok. It should fly beyond 5000 rpm, they engine note will harden and the change to 4th should be smooth.

Apart from that, take the time to find one in the right spec and you will absolutely love it. Good luck!

edit: I realise that this advice might now be redundant but if you bought the car above!

Well, thanks again for the input all. I've bought it. For better or worse. Driven it home this afternoon and I can't fault it, but like I said I've got no experience with these at all.

Where's the best place around Chester to take it for look over?

Hi, I am new to this site so not sure if I can post links to companies...

But i bought my clio 200 cup last september from a company in Chester, they had a great selection of cars and really friendly. I travelled a long way to get it, only one in Alien Green I could find.

As some one said above the air conditioning hasn't bothered me, but recaro's are a must!

The company has 1 clio in at the moment, I just need to know where I can give you the name?

Good luck

It was revitup uk
Dunno if you have heard of them? They advertise on pistonheads that's where I found them.
I was chatting to the owner and he says he always tries to keep at least 1 in stock
