Looking for a Clio....

  Monaco 37/468
Ok, you're probably going to laugh me off this forum for posting this but I don't really care :)

I'm 18 (Going on 19) and I really want a Clio 172...

Buying it's not the problem, but the insurance doesn't leave much left in the pocket... Can anyone recommend an insurer who will give me a decent quote? Obviously adding older named drivers helps but are there any other ways to cut the premium? I've heard of an 18 year old who has got insured on a 182 for 800 quid! Which surprised me a bit!

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Tom

Ring the specailsts all of then will take a good few day.

£800 is unlikly unless its on business insurance or under the parents names (known as fronting which is ilegal if he's the main driver).

Perosnaly I woulnd't recomend it as a car at 19 You'll be likly to crash it hence why premiums are so high.

Welcome to ClioSport

I doubt any insurer will give you a decent quote under 2.5-3k, if they'll quote you at all. Thats even with an older named driver on the policy.

The 18 year old was probably on as a named driver of the policy, with perhaps their parents as the main driver(s). It's known as fronting and frowned upon by the insurance companies and can lead to your claim (if you make one) being thrown out or your policy cancelled altogether if found to be fraudulent.

I'd advise sticking with what you have for a few years (if you can wait) and build up so no claims history so that you can afford the car you want without financially crippling yourself :)

Stereotyping the 19 year olds eh? ;-) I'm not one of these chavs who go down one track roads with the hazards on at 120 MPH :p

I was shocked when I heard 800 quid aswell. Seemed rather .... cheap :)

Can you just clarify this bit for me mate?

"Ring the specailsts all of then will take a good few day."

Cheers mate,
Tom

yeah the insurance will be high due to your age but in all honesty i think maybe the 172 is too fast of a car for you at 18 goin on 19, im not sayin they are the fastest on road but as you are still a inexperianced driver i personnally wouldnt recommened it, look for a lower performance car til your a little more wiser on the roads.

Gte a copy of Max power or other type mags young lags with modified cars might buy open the back pages and ring all the insuracne places there they are often the best specialists.

Yep I'm sterotyping as statistically even a good young driver will crash hence the high insurnace and having a crash ina 182 whilst maybe safe wouldn't be as likjly to wlk as a 1.2 crash since you counldn't do the same speeds.

and no -one is stereo-typing you BUT what 18 year old wont get cocky in a 172? ? lol most people on here my self included still get a smile on our faces when driving are CS but we are a little older and have learned and made mistakes in little 1.2s

I can definatley understand where you're all coming from :) But you know what teenagers are like...stubborn :)

My mate has insured a Corsa 1.6 GSI for 1800 quid, but personally I don't like them and if you find a non-ecotec they're wrecked having been trashed to the moon and back. Any recommendations on an increase from a 1043 CC polo that will be cheaper on insurance than the 172? :)

Thanks,
Tom

I see where you're coming from edde :) Thanks for clarifying the insurance thing. I'm just bored of what I've got...which I suppose will happen with any car except the CS :)

I got my 182 brand new when i was 21, i managed to get my insurance at £1500 a year with 3 years NCB and that was one of only 4 people who would even quote me!

As above, i would get a 1.6 or something for a couple more years until it makes sense to buy a 172/182.

  Monaco 37/468
Understandable :)

What sort of 1.6 would you recommend? I don't want a slug, but obviously like you've been saying don't want to kill myself. I am a very careful driver though and wouldn't go braying it unless I was on a Mway or some sort of high visibility road :) I know you can't get your premium down by telling them that though :)

One thing I like about this forum is the fact that you actually get a reply, and a good reply, not some arrogant git laughing at you telling you where to go :)

Thanks,
Tom

What about a kit car cheaper on insurance plus very quick realy.Otherwise it deend what you want froma car looks power etc.

A 182 will get boring after a bit even a turbo one would things just dull over time. IMO the only advantage of power is it goes a bit quicker its no better for the speed.

If you like the look of the Mk2 Ph2 clio then a 1. dynamique would be good. Get used to the feel and look of the car before you get a 172 182.

If you like the Mk2 Ph1 then a 1.6 RSi would be awsome!

I like the phase 2, but I don't nescessesarily want a clio...could be anything

What would be good would be to tan my mates' GSI (I know I'm just sounding like a typical idiot here) but he harps on as if it's a bloody veyron or something...seriously...

I was looking at the golf GTI but they're too common, everyone's got them plus VW's are expensive to insure as I've found out (£1300 to insure my 1043)...stinger! :(

Well a veyron would be great but im guessing you would need to sell you botty alot of times to a)Pay for the car & b)pay for the insurance hance the thread!

TBH im not the man to ask about other marques as i have only ever owned Clio's. Dont get me wrong i have driven loads of other stuff just never owned anything else.

I dont think you sound like a 'Typical Idiot', most alpha males (me included) love to know our car is the fastest even if we never prove it! I would hold on, let your mate get 9 points and have to get a s**t box corsa or something and then get your 172 and laugh all the way home!

Well he's nearly written it off a few times. It's fucked as well he's having no end of problems

First the clutch went in the middle of town...had to be towed home HAHA :)

Now the coil pack has gone and it's overfuelling (13MPG) if that!!! and maybe the idle control valve is blocked too. He found a slit in his fuel hose today as well. His brake pipes are tightened on finger tight as well. All out death trap :)

Im guessing he has a Nova GSi? By the sounds of it any car that will get you home will get more props than his bag of crap!

what about a saxo vtr, i know you may think chav but i know a few people on here me included who had VTR/S before the clio, a vtr is what i had when i was under 21, they are nippy and not bad to look at.

does it not depend on maturity and driving ability not age??

Given their age now and it not being a massivley popular chav mobile i would think it would be reasonable.

(Please forgive the spelling, many tins sunk now)

Try Greenlight, if you sign as a member here (£5) you get a discount aswell!

  '03 172, now a 2004 CTR
RSi Insurance results on money supermarket:

Third Party F&T:

£3123 :-(

Must be wrong?

I'd try someone else for a quote. Like elephant.co.uk or someone like that.

I got my 172 less than a month after I turned 20, but I had a 206gti nearly a year before this and IMO I was far too young to have a car like that.

It wasnt the fastest thing on the road by any stretch of the imagination but my parents drilled it into me to enjoy the car, but be sensible with it as well. I wasn't a maniac in it through town etc and it paid off as I got a faster car a year later and I love every minute of it.

All i'm trying to say is that its nice to get a fast car when your our age but unless you can be 100% sure your responsible enough its not worth it, especially when you can still have a great laugh in 106XSi/VTRs etc

Another factor to think of, it may seem great now spending all you pennies on your motor but i wish i had saved some of it as life wita mortgage wouldnt be as tough now. Not saying dont have fun but dont stretch yourself just to have the fastest car our of you mates. Remember the faster the car the more it will caost to keep it running

I have to admit without being big headed that I am a very responsible person. I am the lead web designer at my place and I have been through a BTEC ND in I.T so i'm not your common charver :)

I would seriously not be stupid in a fast car as I have seen what can happen and I wouldn't want something like that on my hands :)
