  Clio 182
Hi gents, this is my first post tso please be gentle, and if not at least have the decency to use plenty of lube (I kid, I kid).:D

Anyway after thinking seriously about what car I wanted next, I decided on a small hot-hatch that goes like s**t off of a shovel and after a bgit of uhmming and aahing came ot the natural conclusion: the Clio 182. I have a £6k budget and tommorrow and off to look at a 182 with the following specs:

  • 2004
  • 34'000 miles
  • Black
  • Both cup packs
  • £6'000
It weighs in at exactly £6k which imo is damn good... in fact similar cars are £7k on autotrader and this one looks completely in mint condition and has only ever missed one service. If it looks cocha then i'll like try and better him a bit... I understand the aux belt needs doing at around 36k miles, and i'll try and use that to knock him down a bit.

Anyway i'm hoping the sage CLio owners here can tell me what to look out for specifically when going to look at this beast tommorrow as in all honesty i'm no car expert, and not very mechanically minded. My old man is coming with me and he knows a fair bit, but there may be things we miss!

Really excited about seeing it... and can't wait to take it for a spin. I've heard VERY good things about this car... and am prepared to put up with niggly build quality issues for a ride of this immensity!

So... any tips for a hopefully soon-to-be contributing member of this forum?

6k seems cheap and IMO too cheap for a car of that spec, have you had it HPI'd?

Usual stuff to look out for, tyres, oil, yada yada.

Squeaks and rattles are common.

Phew... thought you meant it was discussed because it was dodgy in some way (besides the title description). To be honest though i've called the guy about it and if i'm being honest he doesn't seem the most naturally gifted communicator, but then again some people just aren't and I can't judge him purely based on that. Hmm, well i'll definately get it HPI checked before I go out I think, RAC one is a fiver online. Then if it checks out ok i'll go see it, and provided it runs ok and all the paperwork checks out i'll likely go for it and try and knock something off. Bit nervous though... never spent this much on a car before and would hate to gget any form of lemon, i'll just be uber-careful...

^Well it has cup spoiler and anth alloys. Splitter seems to be missing but thats quite normal i believe.

As stated already, seems far too cheap for the miles, id do further reserach b4 viewing.

Take your time choosing as there are plenty around.

Just remember it costs nothing to walk away .... and you still have your money in your pocket for another day.

Was gonna say i got 6.5K for my 182, 49K miles and no cup packs (but had anth alloys and sportlines).

Maybe i got a good price afterall.

Take your time, definately a buyers market.

Guess it's this one: http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...LIO&min_pr=5000&max_pr=9000&max_mileage=40000

For some reason I'm sure theres a thread about this car already!

This car is a Category D write off, don't touch with a barge pole!:mad::mad:

Thank God for online HPI checks!

Thats just a scam through and through, theyll want you to pay for the car via paypal and they will tell you they will ship it in the country.
Youll never see the car or your money.

Just for the record, imo 6k is a little low for a 182 although £6500 and you should be in business.

I bought my 04 plate 182 with cup suspension pack but not spoiler pack for £6500

49k, full renault service history, 9months tax, 4months mot.

  Tangoed Works
Also look out for minor things that are pricey. The tyres these came with are Michelin Pilot Exalto 2's. Around £80 quid a corner, alot of people replace with budget tyres and this really s***s on the handling capabilitys.

Cup splitter at front is over £100 for a new one from renault and makes the front end look incomplete if missing. Also suggesting its been whacked in to a speed hump mabye.

Check brakes, fluids should be clean, all really should have full service history and the aux belt change at 36k. If that has been neglected it could take out the cambelt if it goes.

Good luck on your hunt mate.

Also look out for common faults that may allow you to haggle some cash off.

Eg Leaking rear shocks, leaking headlight washers, worn steering wheel etc

Just got back in the house... been out on the road car-hunting all day!

Step-by step saga breakdown:

----------------------------

Phase 1

Turns out the original Clio 182 I was going to look at http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...del=CLIO&min_pr=6000&max_pr=7000&max_mileage= that seemed almost cheap was in fact a Cat D write-off... thank God for online HPI checks eh?

----------------------------

Phase 2

So after that revelation I then went to see another one near Lakeside in Essex advertised for £7'000 only to get there and find out that the 40k miles it was advertised at was in fact close to 80k and had been mis-advertised. Not only that, but the thick ****er of a salesman who looked about 15 had the cheek to say "Ok no worries mate, bye" after explaining that i'd driven 60 miles to see this car based on that advert. No apology, no courtesy, complete set of gimps, very "barry boy" sort of place too. That was this one here http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...del=CLIO&min_pr=6000&max_pr=7000&max_mileage=

----------------------------

Phase 3

Anyway the final car I went to see after the above turned out to be this beauty here, which was being sold at an official Renault dealers for £6'995 with a low 33k mileage and both cup options (though that's not stated in the advert) http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...del=CLIO&min_pr=6000&max_pr=7000&max_mileage=

To be honest as soon as I saw it I fell in love with the thing. The car was in fabulous condition, only a few minor chips to the paint, very minor kerbing to one alloy, and a chip in the windscreen, which i'll get on to in a minute.

Anyway after sitting inside and having a fiddle I was then given the keys and was able to take it out for a test spin. Now, bearing mind I not only had the dealer, but also my dad in the back I was still seriously impressed with how the car handled and more importantly the acceleration, I couldn't stop grinning, God knows what it'll be like when i've no lardy blokes filling it and it's just me in there, can't wait! It feels so light and nimble and the seating position is very, very comfortable. I'm also very chuffed with the sheer amount of kit it has too, makes my Vectra look like a flintstones mobile! Also there were no rattles and everything felt solid.

Anyway after the test drive we got back and I had already decidded I wanted it, so then we sorted out the financials. It was as I suspected really... not much budging on price. I ended up paying £6'995 with a full years tax thrown in (£210), 3 months full parts & labour warranty (can be extended to 12 months for £295, don't think I will though). It will also be given a full service before I get it... the alloys will be refurbed, the bodywork will be gone over to get rid of any chips in the paintwork, and the windscreen will of course be fixed, and if it's too deep a chip completely replaced.

I'd have liked to knock them down a bit further but they weren't budging and to be honest I can see why... apparently while i'd been looking at it and taking it for a spin about 5 people had called about it wanting to see it. In fact I actually nabbed it off of another guy who was supposed to be buying it but his finance was being refused by the credit companies... the dealers saw this as a bad sign and put it back on the market (just before I rang asking if it was still available) only for him to ring the dealership after i'd agreed to take it saying that his dad had agreed to finance the car and if it was available he'd have it. Tough **** tbh.;) So i'm sure they would have had no lack of potential buyers so no reason to be too trigger-happy with the deals.

All in all after doing some research into the Clio 182 market in terms of pricing I think I got solid deal, and that the dealers weren't being greedy with the price... I honestly think they could have charged another few hundred quid with ease, especially if they'd serviced the car and refurbed the alloy before putting it on show. Maybe it wasn't the bargain of the century, but I know that it's in fantastic condition, wasn't ragged to hell before I got it (older lady owners who didn't do much mileage), and that when it leaves the dealers it's going to look as good as new due to them going over it all with a fine toothcomb. The full years tax doesn't hurt either, and i'll get them to stick a full tank in for me as well when I collect it.

So I go to pick it up next saturday, and all I have to do now is sort out my finance, insurance, and sell my old vectra for hopefully around £800 or so. I'm over the moon, and really can't wait to drive it. I have what I want now... a small hot-hatch that offers performance and character by the bucketload. Win!. :D

Guys do you think I should take the full 12-months warranty for the extra £295. With it the final price would be £7'290.

Do you think that's decent overall guys given the age of the car and it's low mileage/unmolested condition? Hell maybe it's not an uber-deal, but I feel very very comfortable knowing it's from a main dealership and there will be no nasty surpriss in store for me. :)

You got an excellent deal from the dealer bud! Did you HPI this one as well? ;)

For an extra £300 I would get an extended warranty, just for peace of minds sake.

Sounds like a good deal but be aware that they will just want it off the forecourt now so these paint repairs and wheel refurbs will be a rush job by the mobile painter that comes round to all the dealers and probably wont be the best job in the world.
Check the work done before you take it away as you might end up with patchy sprayed in chips that stand out a mile then you'll have to get the parts sprayed properly yourself..

That second clio in Essex you looked at doesnt state mileage in the ad so how did you think it was 40k? if there is no mileage stated it usually means much higher than average for the year..

The extended warrenty seems ok, depends if you have to make use of it.

Haha I tell you what... i'll be HPI'ing everything I bloody guy in future!

I'm picking it up next saturday so it isn't going anywhere till then... they have time to do a decent enough job! To be honest though as I said, the chips/curbing only one wheel) are so minor that all is needed to restore it back to full health is a small amount of time. It's really that good already!

Well that's what I thought too but I didn't just guess the mileage, I called them and the woman on the phone told me 40k! :(

Think i'll go for it, cheers bud. :)

Well done and sounds like a good deal. It pays (literally) to buy using the head rather than the heart (says he who in the past bought cars because I just "wanted it" without using my head  )

Glad you got a good 'un especially after that Cat D episode. I'm sure you will love the 182 .... it'll def keep you grinning :D

PS I usually contact the previous owner to find out a bit more on a car and ask if there were any issues with it.

Black Gold mate, I didn't want any other colour hehe.

just out of interest I notice the ECU remaps only add 13bhp or so... are they really worth the £200 even if you get a good one?

havent done engine mods yet. am debating what to do for this year, if at all. GDI are doing throttle bodies for 3500 fitted w/o cams with standalone.

very tempting. Congrats on the black gold btw, by far the best colour lol ;-)

I know what you mean, me and my old man only ever usually buy private... but 12 months warranty, 1 years tax and a full service with a main dealer before it's released to me was too good to pass up! :D

I'm alwso wondering how long to keep it for before selling... it should hold at least £5.5k value or so in 18 months right?

  Clio 182
Well another bit of good news... my dad being the amazing chap he is has out of the blue offered to pay a grand towards the new car (I did protest but he was having none of it, trust me) as it's my first "proper" car and he's happy for me... meaning that i'm effectively getting it for a grand total 0f £6'290 out of my own pocket, makes it even more of a bargain for me! :D

  Clio 182
Just called them again as someone on another forum reminded me the timing belt needed doing at around 36k... so got them to arrange to swap that, and also give me a full tank of petrol when I collect. Bo! Brapapapapa. :D
