Lots of vapour from my 182

  White clique
Hi everyone,

i've got an 04 182, 39k on the clock, full service, idles perfectly (as perfect as a 182 can!!), start first time etc and is in great health.... apart from:

I only ever do short town journeys, 8 miles to and from work, and it only sees a motorway maybe once evrey 3 weeks or so.

I have noticed that if i accelerate hard in 5th (on the track of course :) ) from say 80 upwards there is lots and lots of vapour out the back, it licks back onto the window to the point where it's dripping wet. The vapour cloud is pretty thick as well. It only does this when i boot it, and when the outside temp is cold, at idle and normal driving its ok, apart from the usual amount of vapour from the exhaust. It didnt used to do this, Renault have said the exhast is fine, its definitely not a petrol leak, so is this normal - anyone else noticed anything similar?

Happened in mine once before when I was out for a boot with a mate - he phoned me cos he thought my engine had blown!!

Its normal I think, just a build up of condensation in the exhaust. Mine does it when its warming up but fine when up to temp. Sounds like it needs a longish run if its not had one for a while to dry it out.

Mine does it in this weather, but only for the first 5-6 mins, then it's fine.

Steams the rear window up a treat.

thanks everyone, it just been a lot more noticable recently, to the point where is almost looks embarrasing! Everything else runs fine and its not smoke (thank god) so hopefully its just one of those things. I'll mention it at the next service just in case its about to blow up.

get oil change done, moisture in oil goes into breather whn it dries out of oil as boils quicker and evaporates.
gets there from short journeys and not getting up to norm temp which takes at least 20 mins driving.

Take the cat out which contributes to alot of it, the backbox also holds it until you boot it

If it was petrol it would be black smoke

182's hold water in the back boxes like a reservoir! and with you only doing short journeys all the time thats not helping. The exhaust is not getting hot enough to evaporate the water...

Take it for a sprinted drive every weekend.. that should sort it.

Indeed, boot it from time to time to dry it out or it'll rust and drop off! lol!

I can't wait till Paul's drops off! Even though it looks immaculate they rust from the inside out!

I'm sure it's just a 'feature', but have you checked your water and oil levels? If they're consistently fine, ignore the problem and go for a boot when the roads are quiet. Car's need to be driven...

Don't worry about it!

open coolant reservoir see if it's clear with no oil on top. If not your fine no problem. if so you have a cracked headgasket....

thanks everyone - the news is that since my original post i've PXed it for a 197 - so only have it for 1 more day! The guy i traded my car with is an eexpert on 182's based in Littlehampton, so he's familiar with the niggles and common themes and i mentioned this to him, i think the short journeys prevented it being spat out the back fully. Hopefully this issue is sorted on the 197 systems.
