Loud Noise in a Mk2 V6

Just had a "sprint" in the vee and have come back a little puzzled. Driving fast in 6th there came a very loud induction type shrill enough of a din to make you slow down considerably. When stopped to an idle the sound was much more tappety that the ususal than the normal warble. Carrying on home at normal driving speeds and then putting her to bed hot and wet after another 10 mins of driving the idle was back to its normal self. What had happened? Didnt over rev, didnt see a lack of pulling power/performance, no smoke, no leaks on the gagrage floor afterwards, just a din at high straight line speed that made my passenger clasp his ears! Should I be worried....Anyone got any ideas????

Did you check the oil level? Maybe its running low on lube, or your oils not the right viscosity...

Alternatively, dont drive so fast!
