Low Mileage Cup - Where best to sell?

Ive got a RS200 Cup (factory cup) in Racing Blue which I brought from the first owner earlier this year, they were ex military and drove it for the first year doing just 8,600 miles before it was parked up in a parents garage whilst they went back on travels. Due to the VAT rebate complexity of military cars it ended up parked up and was never re-registered until this year.

To cut a long story short after recommissioning (replacing original perished tyres, disks, pads, wipers, major servicing including cambelt and dephaser. headlights) and getting the paintwork polished / corrected I now have a mint 8,700 mile 2010 cup. Its a factory cup, totally factory standard, with air con and recaro option seats).

Where would be the best place to sell the car - collecting cars, PistonHeads auctions, auto trader? A specialist in low mileage hot hatches called KGF made me an offer but its below what I was hoping for. What [roughly] do you think its worth?

You could try Collecting Cars. The AG Press Car got quite a bit of interest & made strong money as did the Renault Heritage Fleet. There condition perhaps not as good but some provenance. Couple of 182's & Trophy's have went for less than I would have expected.

Depends how much effort you want to put into it. Collecting Cars you must have to stump up or Pics & agree a realistic reserve. But Cost is Bourne by Purchaser.

KGF always have nice pricey stuff but hold onto it for a long time. Do they do a Sale or Return where they sell on commission?

Tricky as to make good money someone needs the space to buy & store otherwise the premium they pay will be lost when the use it.

The market peaked imo 2021 ish late. Maybe a bit into 2022.

I’d be holding onto it personally if you can.

Nice second car to keep mint and enjoy on days out. 👍

All stuff from 80's seem to have gone mad recently.

Clio's are at the phase where the attrition of them being tracked & used is killing the numbers. Everything has to dip before it comes back. I actually think the recent inflation on Clio values has been more Covid related rather than them reaching that point. Now interest rates are kicking in market potentially going to dip.

I would keep and enjoy it as you say. Cars as investments has pitfalls.

But Even it its worth £25k in 5 years you would not be that much better off as your £15k would be worth £20k if you put it in a 6% interest account. And you will have the costs over that 5 years.

This bites alot of people in the bum.
I've seen people who've put away stuff from new, holding onto it for 15+ years to try and make a profit at the end.

They basically made nothing, and had the thing sat on them the whole time.

Use it for a summer, enjoy it, keep everything ticking over and not perishing/seizing. Ask again in a year. Will still be worth a good £ to a niche selection of buyers.

Your pool of buyers is small as you'll be commanding a premium over the higher mileage examples. The market for the Mk3's is a bit weird atm and it's definitely the wrong time of year to be selling one IMO. These high priced Clio's often get ignored, because you can buy a well sorted Megane for around the same money.
I think if you put it up for £10-12k would be an ideal sort of price. It would just be a case of waiting for that perfect buyer.

If you want it sold quickly, £7500 is more reasonable, but I imagine that leaves you no profit after your purchase price.

KGF is proper tin pot, I’d be trying Appreciating Classics personally.

Collecting cars will likely refuse to set a reserve price you are comfortable with, as they base these on similar cars sold prior. It’s probably not worth the risk this time of year either.

‘Specialists’ will always low-ball you and then stick it up for double what they paid. I’d say keep it till the summer, get some good photos of it, and sell privately. EBay has always worked for me.

The problem with this car, is there's 'no provenance' to back it up, which, a collector will want. I suspect that's why KGF low balled him, probably didn't want it.

Hmm, they offered £13k trade and were chasing me, so i'd assume they did want it and that they'd be advertising it at 50-100% more than that.

Its got provenance in terms of military sale record, copies of associated paperwork, signed sale contract from only prior owner confirming no damage since new, mileage correct, confirmation paperwork from Renault uk, nova paperwork with dvla to register it, plus full photographic record of recommissioning - e.g. original 2009 tyres, old brake discs and pads unworn etc etc. Plus all the bills for cambelt, dephaser, major service, inc plugs, filters, wipers etc etc

But I agree some would rather a car thats been used year round and serviced annually at Renault, although it'd then have more mileage on.

£13k is top dollar for any 200 atm, and that's the sought after colours or raider specials which are very rare. All depends on what you paid for it I supposed but holding onto it isn't without costs. Plaster it around the Facebook groups and see if anyone come Knocking.

It is actually without costs for me to hold on to it, one of several unusual cars in a large garage - besides, i suspect there wont be many similar cup cars in factory fresh condition and with just 8.5k miles.

For those saying i'm daft to retain or seek a decent price, i'm old enough to have turned my nose up at limited edition E30 M3's at £8k, Delta Evos at £6k, Sierra Cosworths at £3k, 3.2 Carreras at £10k and 205GTis at £1500.

I think these are on the cusp of becoming quite collectable, especially when slightly better than average 205gtis are commanding 20k.

Time will tell.

I dunno to be honest. The Special editions they did on the 200 were dogshit, cosmetic changes but little to actually get excited about other than a limited production run. It's artificial exclusivity.

It's no 182 Trophy and it's certainly no 172 Cup in the level of effort actually went into designing them.

It may not be without storage costs but you still have to insure and maintain it.

And where does the 200 Cup rank in terms of desirability… probably behind the v6, 172 Cup, 182 Trophy, Williams, R26.R, Spyder, 200 Silverstone (?), 5GTT, 200 AG etc etc. Does it even make the RS top 10?

At the end of the day it’s your car, and your choice. There’s someone out there who might buy the car at the price you want to sell for, but it could be years before you find them. Personally I think for the money you might want, the target market will be very small.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush…

This is true, but the average number of owners on an AG or Grey 200 is twenty eighty thousand because everyone wants to own one.
At some point in time any low mileage example of an old car will become valuable. Just watch the late brake shows barn finds, unfortunately it's rarely the person who parked them up who sees that value!

Not sure if anyone in the trade at the moment is working to those sorts of margins on high-ish value vehicles - 50% - £19500 / 100% - £26000.

Sounds a lovely car though.

Thanks all for guidance, I think I'll put it on CC in the Spring and try my luck.

Worst case I'll just enjoy it for a few years, don't see it depreciating.

They are all hugely undervalued at the moment - even a half decent 182/197/200 is the same price as a basket case 205GTI.....

Imho i would keep it longer. That car will apreciate. Low mileage, Recaro, Great color.

If that car was LHD would value 25 000 easily in Europe. Since it´s RHD the market is more limited, but no way i would let it go for 13k.

You're really starting to split hairs when you're into stuff like it's the last 3-door they did. Maybe the N/A engine counts for something, but it wasn't the same kind of raw(er) experience you got with the 1*2. Which everyone raves about.

IMO part of the problem is the 200T and 220T were actually really good, so the Mk3 200 doesn't particularly stand out among it's peers.

Opinions might change in time, but right now it doesn't seem to have that much excitement surrounding it.

Suggestion to sell for £7.5k is funny, it's probably the best and lowest mileage example in the uk

Looking foward to seeing it on CC's next year - only time will tell what it will make however it's not really in the same league as the AG Top Gear car - that car is a definate talking point at any car show in the country (Also I'm not sure what price would be put on the Number Plate alone) -

You’re picking and choosing the things I’m saying completely out of context now :ROFLMAO:

I do agree that there are a lot of daft things being said now though. 200 Cups are peak Mk3’s and peak N/A hot hatch of that era.
 


Top
