M4A on windows media player

basically, i lost my music collection and have been robbing up everyone elses, i have a fair amount of it back, bt since it was up loaded by their itunes from cds, its all saved as 'm4a'

however i dont like itunes, and want to use windows media player,
but it doesnt like that file extension, can anyone recomend a way of staightening out my conundrum(sp)??

please help
