Matching your inlet manifold

  182 inside
Hi all, Stripped off my friends inlet manifold on his 182 this afternoon and started porting the edges etc to match gasket etc. It's taken 2 hours of filing and dremil work but should see results tomorrow. I am amazed that places are charging around £200 to do what i did in an afternoon.

Also fitted janspeed sports cat and exhaust so even more breathing!!

Rolling road and remap coming.

Hopefully get my own 172 soon :)

When I get my 172, i'll do a 'HOW TO' so you guys can save some cash for mods!

Lol, if youve ported it to the gasket and not touched the head you'll lose power. the gaskets are bigger than the ports so youll hit a 'step'. Thats why places charge 200 notes as they know what theyre doing and have researched the best possible places to remove material to increase flow. Its not about the size of the ports its how efficiently gasses can flow around them which gives power.

The tunners do more than just the edges though.

Plus they leave a 20 thou gap so the manifolds smaller than the gasget to help.

They?

Or am i the only person to have said/do that?

I've seen manfolds by supposed specialists that look nothing like the gasket and are about 2-3mm larger, there is some simply apalling work out there.

how can you port somthing by hand and leave a 20 thou gap, were humans not robots

How can those people on the street write words on a grain of rice?

20 thou is half a mill, and if you've got a good hand, its not hard.

lol....it isnt hard to follow a line and leave a consistant gap! "practice makes perfect"...so after a few years, you kinda pick it up.
Also for best result you should blue the joints, to get a perfect match and use RTV sealer as opposed to a gasket.

Theres also a little work to be done inside the runners...not just at the edges.

As for pricing, price of circa £150-200 is based on maybe 3 hours work at professional rates, for professional workmanship.

steady hand, scribed edges and hold on. i think I know what i'm doing. Yamaha motorcycle mechanic for 5 years. Seen so many write ups and worked in a tuning shop for a while!!
Looks like I've hit a sore spot on the clio's.

20 thou is massive where i work, if its not within a thou it aint no good.
benr will be doing mine when i have the cash, cant beat the best !!

in an engineering sense it is monumentally pathetic yes.

Which is why we work to the tenth of a thou or 5 micon max on any precision item.
