McGard nuts, how to remove??

Right surely some of you have had experiences with arsey wheel nuts? Well I can't get to the otherside to change my brakes so I'm stuck.

It's a McGard effort, supposed to be the best, but they forgot something, the patterns are made of cheese. So The lock just rides over the thread at any sign of force, the spare key does the same which suggest the bolt is damaged too.

Took it to a garage, tried to bash the socket on to losen it but nothing (he says i'm going to have problems), can't bash a socket over it as it has a rotating collar.

Just trying to lower it up against a wall now so there is enough inward force for it to grip but I doubt it will work.

Has anyone got any experiences, ideas? As i've got 285mm brakes on one side and 239mm on the other :(

Yup

I had the same problem, there a b**ch to get off when damaged !!

I had to wait for a nother key from McGuard took 3 weeks to come thru !! cost £7

aye my bro had a problem with them, luckily a garage managed to take them off with a windy gun but had to put alot of force behind it

same problem, smashing a socket over them does f.k all.. tried drilling them off - not a chance. Sent off to macGuard for a spare key, took 3 days to arrive. Good German efficient there.

i had this problem with the reno locks, i managed to chisel the rotating collars off, then bash a socket over them

A spare key wont do anything in my case, think the pattern on the bolt isn't too good either.

Was that a garage or tyre place that did that Paul? Do you know what they did?

u can weld bolts over the locking nut and them take um off wi sockets

Weld doesn't 'stick' to these i've been told. Anyways my bolts go right into the wheel so you couldn't reach it.

Difficult, yeah!

yer that works with mc gaurds too

other options are there are some special bits u can by , and it slots over the round mc cgaurd then screws onto them they cos about 10-20quid if u can find em http://www.premiertools.co.uk/item1335.htm , need a inpact wrench to use though

of u can pay some one 15-20 a wheel roughly

I had very same problem. The collar fell off mine! That actually made it hard as the wheel brace then wobbled about when trying to loosen the bolts. I took it down to Budget (tyre place) and they got it off, they also took all 4 of the other locking bolts out just incase I had problems with them in the future (I got new locking nuts). They also popped the 2 other new wheels on for me that I hadn't been able to do because of the dodgy locking nuts! Did it all for £10.
Think they managed it fairly easy though. hammered the socket on and 'air guned' them out.
You have that option. Option of welding normal bolts on. Can drill them out. Or get a tool that you drill into the centre of the locker and then it screws the bolt out, reverse thread or something it's called. Any decent wheel and tyre place should be able to sort you out though.
