Mega depreciation of V6’s

Just read this months EVO magazine with the end of term report on their V6 clio....

Jesus H!... it lost 9 grand in 18 months....he traded it in for 16k.

Now that has just put it in the Civic type r bracket...errr.... I think I know which one Id go for.

Any of the V6 owners crying into their pints at the minute?

No, people like me are jumping for joy! I reckon theyll drop fairly quickly to £10k, then stay there until they become a collectors item.

There are loads of factors like that being a trade price and the fact the Phase 2 V6 is about to come out.

Make no mistake... Im chuffed they are coming down in price so I can get my hands on one sooner...

At the same time though I cant help0 feeling that renault have stiffed the V6 owner with their pricing...

well if they get to 10k and i make it through the year without a claim at christmas ill be treating myself to one

I dont think theyll be at 10K for a long long time!

Remember 16K is a trade in price the dealer is going to whack at LEAST another grand and a half on top of that!

Escort Cossis done the same they dropped to 16k really quickly and then steady out around that price, Still years on you can pay 12k for a L plate. Im sure that is what will happen to the V6.

It will be at least 5 yrs before you can by 1 for 10k

If they dropped to 10k everyone would buy one, so the market will dictate that they dont drop to that sort of price. Theyll drop to the level where people will have to choose between say a 2nd hand Evo or something...

Went to motor nation today, there is a brand new V6 03 reg for £19,999.

They must be trying to get rid of the old stock before the new shape comes out.

Ive seen a X reg with 14000 miles for 17k (h.p.i clear & tracker).

In 6 months there will be some knocking about for £15k, and I ill be seriously considering one then.
Not sure if I can stomach the insurance bill though, im 24 with 7 years no claims and the cheapest quote so far is £1900 :(

Its not hard to see why they have dropped though, impratical for a car which normally has 5 seats and a boot, some bad write ups and the mk2 promises to be much much better. I think youd have to have no financial sense to get a mk1 now to be honest, no one would buy it off you!

Rob, I think that the newer V6 will still have only two seats, so will be just as impractical - unless you know different!!

Rob - Im no Clio V6 expert, but the Phase2 is making an extra 25bhp and has a few chassis tweeks to hone the handling. Doesnt seem that far from the original design brief to me.

Ill reserve judgement until Ive driven both!

In truth, the Phase1 V6 had a lot to live up to and was bound to come in for some heavy scrutiny - as will the Phase2. I dont think that comparing its figures to a Focus RS etc really is the best analysis - nor talking of scary on the limit handling. I think that misses the point. I think something like an Audi TT would fare worse under such scrutiny.

It may be slightly flawed, but thank God someone had the balls to make it.

Renault have a heritage when it comes to this sort of thing:

I still love the V6s, and i dont believe a cup is faster than one either but the mk2 will have a lot of differences, not a few tweaks. The Audi is renowed for not being entertaining but it isnt expensive to run, it is fairly pratical, reliable, good residuals etc. etc.

In a few months this topic will read Phase 2 V6 is worth 10k, followed by Phase 3 V6 is worth 10k.

Thats cars.

Well cars which are excellent dont depreciate, 360s, M3s etc. But youre right mostly this is what happens, my dads vanquish has plummeted in value just because it isnt the best. I think the mk2 will keep its value better, i dont think the mk1 will depreciate much more than it has already.

no the mk1 will drop the same way

its the same with all expensive french cars

Market Values decide on the value not how good it is - as Tom says!. Escort Cossies were still 20-20k 3-4years after launch. When they were discontiniued they went up some £30k+ for some cars that were 5 years old. The RS Scene is completely different tho. Less people in this country want a French car than a RS, that just the way it is.

I suppose getting a mk1 v6 now would be a bit of a gamble... not knowing whether their price will stabilise.

Hopefully they will become a bit of a classic soon enough and then hold firm.

That will probably go out the window though if the mk2 is vastly better.. then youll get the "whatever you do dont buy a mk1 etc..."

Dunno I reckon Id get one as a bit of fun, prepared to take a hit on the price and only keep it for 6 months or so...
