Microsoft Patent Sudo

  Fiat Bravo Active TJet
I did mean to post something up the other day about this when I found out. Has anyone else seen this news?

I reckon that this could be bad for most of the other OS's out there, since they're probably going to have to pay royalties to Microsoft for it now.

Here's the article that I saw about it: http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20091111094923390

And here's the patent that MS have been granted: http://patft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph...7,617,530.PN.&OS=PN/7,617,530&RS=PN/7,617,530

I'm seriously wondering what this means for OS's that aren't Microsoft now.

I work for a company that deals with stuff like this.. and if someone hasn't ever patented the idea, then whatever an article on the internet says is irrelevant

I can't say that there's anything wrong with them patenting it. Like you say, if people haven't done so already, then why not.

I was more thinking about the consequences. Personally I work on Linux for quite a bit, and used to work on UNIX, but depending on what MS are going to do after the above patent, then are they going to have to change the fundamental sudo function that's used so that they don't have to pay royalties for it?
