i've had both...i really liked my mk1 but the mk2 is a definate step up...but if you havent got loads of cash to spend i would prefer a mint mk1 than a rough mk2...
on a mk1 avoid the siver ones (everyones got one of those...sorry buy it's true) go for the pearl black (so much nicer than the black gold mk2 colour,and the best colour for the mk1's) or the metallic blue both will be hard to find but worth it...

i would say mkII phase 3 all day giles...
like ive driven MkII phase 1 and the drive is completly different, its more raw...but ive never been a fan of the interior bits that are different from phase 3

i would be after a Trophy if i were you...i'll be looking myself towards the end of the year.

RS-1's are awesome, different to drive than a 182 by quite a bit. they feel rawer and you have to work harder somehow. I've only driven standard 182's/172's and a Trophy when it comes to Ph2's, and the Trophy was simply awesome. I'd have one tomorrow.

if you can hold on...a mint rs-1 might be for sale later this year anyways.

mk1 172 :approve: because its less common and i prefer the white dials in the mk1 172 imo. never driven mk2 172 so cant comment on how it drives to compare.
