Phase 1 everytime, Aluminium bonnet 0-60 6.6 sec!! definately the one to have!!Awesome look from head on. Only let down is the dash, small price to pay.

Wasnt it just the early mk1's that had an Alluminium bonnet. The bonnet on my Exclusive certainly wasnt..

I love my Ph1 172 but cant help thinking I'm losing money on it now. Just can way up selling it and adding 4-5K to get a newer 182 that perfoms the same.
If I sell mine then I will have to get and Evo 5 or 6 just to get some nice performance gains. But for the time being the Phquick is staying as she makes me smile everyday.

Always have preferred the ph1 for looks, but haven't driven any ph2's long enough to make comparisons. Phase 1 rocks!

Interesting thread. I agree about the throttle comments. Cable throttle can add alot of driver involvement to a car. Its difficult to describe until you drive a cable throttle car back to back with a non cable throttle car.

Im glad i went for an early 172. I really wanted a valver but couldnt find any that didnt need alot of work, and this was the next best thing.

The ph1 172 is actually quicker to 60 than a golf GTi....


Golf is a better car though and like you said, 4 times the price!

golfs dsg book time 0-60 is 6.8, phase 1 172 is 6.6. only top speed is the gti better. 0-100 the clio is a second quicker (17vs18)

Back on topic, I owned teh 182 with cup packs before a type r, and now a phase 172 for financial reasons, and i would overall say i preffered the 182, but i dont think my 172 is favoured by the previous owner sticking cheap front tyres on. The cheapo fronts - exalto rears are a s**t combination. So ill have to change the tires and come back

miss the xenons though......
