Mk1 Hybrid

One day i might put an engine in this car and leave it in there!
Any how, as a couple of people already know i recently bought this

It was bought because of this

Plans for the 172 are unclear at the moment, unfortunatly it isn't worth much without an engine, i do have a spare F4R but its phase 2 so not a direct fit, i may buy a 1.2 mk2 ph1 and put the 172 bits onit and then give it to my brother as it will make a perfect first car, at the minute though im not sure, so it can rest in the garage

I will be putting that engine in my MK1, the 172 engine is currently running standard ecu but ill be swapping that for a stand alone unit, it is fitted with jenvey 48mm throttle bodie's/uprated engine mounts and thats pretty much it.

Yesterday i took out my F7R and trial fitted the radator i ordered, it didnt fit, i considered cutting the part of the subframe but instead i have found a radaitor that is exactly valver width with the shorter hieght of the one pictured which has now been ordered, along with a fan, i have also ordered shorter trumpets as the ones on the 172 are to big (90mm)

On an F7 the 90mm are fine but the angle they come out at on an F4 means the bonnet wouldn't shut

All you need is a Ph1 inlet mani and idle control valve to fit a ph2 engine matey

Looking good btw!

I was going to buy Russ's car just for the engine too lol should be rapido if you manage to get enough air into the trumpets

  Ph1 track 172
im confused,

you're taking the engine out of that RREEAALLLYYY nice ph1,
and putting it in a mk1?

why not just leave the engine in that?? and do a few more mods with the tim/money you would have spent changing the engines??

Yes changing the trumpets will affect performance, i am going for a stand alone ecu and it will be remapped.

It wont cost me any money to change the engine, i will do it myself, the reason for putting the engine in the mk1 is because the mk1 is a better car (imo)
The 172 is great, well kept and a credit to Russ, but it doesnt have the suspension my mk1 has, the brakes, e.t.c... Every bush/suspension/steering component was new on my car last year :)

The rr graph must be wrong? look at where the torque and power cross on the rpm :S

Its right mate, the left hand side is BHP and reads upto 210, and the right hand side is torque which reads upto 165, thats why the graph doesnt cross at 5252rpm, but if you look at both readings at 5252 they are the same.

Oh, the shorter trumpets might loose a bit of torque, but it wont be a huge amount.

Thanks for the credit btw :)

Isnt there a grey Mk1 on here with a ITB'd F4R engine running 90mm trumpets? I'm pretty sure i've seen one. Just cut the second skin out of the bonner to give it more room?

There maybe but it was probably running the'sf' bodies, the single ones, im using twins which are longer than the singles to begin with

I feel sorry for the ph1 :(

I also feel sorry for the engine, as all the effort Russ put into getting it work on the existing ECU is being destroyed :(

I also REALLY like black ph1's :(

On the plus side, I like the sound of the project, and you being local, I'd love a chance to come and have a look.

That was mine yeah. I could use that setup on an F7R, and thought i could use it on the F4R. However once id actually got it in the engine bay the engine angle way wrong and the trumpets fouled the bonnet so i had to changed from 90mm trumpets to 40mm.

Engine out

Tommorrow i will mount the alternator and test fit my short rad which should arrive, i really want to drop it in but im going to wait until i have an alternator belt.

I wanted to do it yesterday but organised to go look at a car (which turned out to be a piece of s**t)

I would have put it in today but i dont want to be messing about with aux belts while its in the car, im hoping to have it all done for Friday so i can then tow it to a friends to have the stand alone and mapping done.

Taking the engine out was fairly easy, however the age and milage has taken its toll on some parts, the drive shaft's are siezed in the hubs and will take some bashing to get out, And what a stupid design on that cat, took me ages to get it out! Engines fairly clean think it may have a slight leak from the oil breather plate, but thats it i think, good job on the matching while looking down the butterfly's and the manifold is a very good match so thanks Russ for buying the Jenvey one!
The chadhil one i fitted to a williams was an absolute heap.

I found they seemed to do that pretty quickly mate, took me ages to get the originals out lol.

I matched that manifold, I feel all proud of myself now

Not done much today, been raining all day, i went to pirtex to get ym power steering lines made up but they didn't have the right fittings and asked if i could bring the old ones, so ill do that tommorrow.

2 power steering pipes taken off for the fittings

I moved one of the hose's to take a diffrent route to make room for the down pipe (not sure if it will now foul the dog bone mount but it is inline with the rack and will be clamped down, so i hope it will be ok)

DSC000932.jpg

this lot has now arrived
Shorter trumpets
2 fuel line fuel rail with pressure regulator
2 16mm joiners
16mm-22mm hose

DSC000952.jpg

And my second rad arrived, which is perfect, even went in on the mk1 rubber mounts, however there was a problem.

DSC00101.jpg

However i will now need to secure it in somehow, i was thinking of gluesing the rubbers on the bottom of the rad, then using the proper mountings to secure it up top ?

Alternaotr belt still didnt come and niether has my downpipe.
I cut down the alternator bracket as it bolted in where the knock sensor is so i cut the end off so the knock sensor could be bolted in, i also had to chop a bit of the top as it didnt clear the itb's.

DSC000982.jpg

i then changed the fuel rail to the double hose version, i then realised i already had the double hose version

DSC000953.jpg

Then i fitted the alternator, with the alternator fitted my car wouldn't fit in the garage as the engine stuck out a bit to far, so i put it in.

DSC00103.jpg

And put on the new carbon bonnet (naples bit will be removed)

DSC00105.jpg

Today i did alot.
Driver shafts in
gear linkage on
4th mount on (lower gearbox mount)
My shorter rad came so i made some brackets and fitted that and cut down some hose's.
got my pas hose's from pirtek
removed the map tank
tried to fit alternaotr belt but it was to short so need to get another

basically all thats left is
fit pas hose's
fit down pipe (if it ever arrives)
connect fuel lines
fit alternator belt
Tow it to APD

Ive ordered a sausage filter and back plate but i couldn't resist refitting the old one to see how it all goes together

DSC00100-1.jpg

Heater matrix hose's all done, very crude, but will do the job

DSC00104.jpg

fuel rail feed connected (had to cut off hard plastic from the push type fitting so i could attach the mk1 hose)
