Mk1 v6 Suspension Question

V

v6Max

I had the suspension on my v6 upgraded, thanks to K-Tec and their excellent work, and when the alignment was done we found out that as standard Renault specify positive camber on the front (this is not because of what was measured on the car but because of what the official information was in the computer alignment setup)

Does anyone know why they do this? Given the improvement that has occured by using some negative camber (not too much) in terms of front end feel, turn in etc it seems a strange choice.

Cheers, Max

  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

It was to introduce some "safe" understeer as it was a bit wayward if you threw the front into a corner - particularly if you changed direction quickly eg chicane

YES! lol

with such a poor rear end, the only thing they could do to make it safe for the market is to make it handle overly safe.

Cheers, I thought that may be the reasoning behind it.

It will be interesting to see how it handles at the next trackday with the changes made.

BenR, in response to another question in the v6 rivals thread you said the back is the front! of a Laguna with the steering locked hence the inherent flex in the rear end. So the obvious question is: What do you do to remove that flex? K-Tec were telling me about someone who effectively had the rear end redesigned (suspect that might be you, MikeT) so is that the way to go?

  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

Its easy = get a Mk2 rear subrame from Dave Appleby (it has the redesigned fully captive rosejointed track control arms youre after) and bolt it in, then have the steering arms on the hubs reinforced by a comentant machine shop - the difference is huge particularly in high speed corners where the standard car gets uncomfortable. Other thing to look at is the tyre pressures - check Mk1 to MK2 and yooul find a big difference - I would only run MK2 pressures with the revised geometry.

Thanks MikeT, can you get me contact info for Dave Appleby (personal message is probably best).

Tell me about the tyre pressures, I have changed the tyres on the front of the car already and do tend to run them and the rear ones a little harder on trackdays but any additional comments would be appreciated.

  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

Project254 is your man - you can pm him from here

Pressures are on the Reanult motorsport trackdays sheets which I cant lay my hand on but they are wildly different Mk1 to Mk2.

Its probably on their web site
