Mk2 1.2 16v - start it up, and it cuts back out

My girlfriend has a Y-reg 2001 1.2 16v (mk2 ph2) and a starting problem.

When she starts it up it'll quickly die, although it can be kept alive if rev'd.

The engine management light is on, although after a while it'll be fine and can be driven. It seems to happen every couple of weeks.

The AA and local independent garage can see no faults diagnostics machines.

Any ideas?

I expect it'll have to go to Renault but I'd hate to pay them a fortune for guesswork if it's intermittent and the fault isn't really known.

I remember this problem, took me about a year to fix, ended up being a crack in the cylinder head.

Possible causes TDC sensor, Coil Pack.
