Morego 202 bhp conversion.

Last week a customer contacted me expressing an interest in carrying out an RS2 Manifold conversion on his 182 to complement the 202 bhp he already had. I found it intriguing that at no point with a £1600 package had he been provided with any sort of graph demonstrating the cars raised output.

Last week he came over to us and we took the car to a local RR that we implement for all of our development work so I could attain a bench mark / gather data from the car before we can began work on it.

I had already prepared the unfortunate chap for the eventuality that his car would not make 202 bhp with the work the package includes (reground cams, live remap, exhaust & a sports filter). I was however still expecting 190 ish at a push (as per mild cams *usual* results)

Anyway:

(the blank space in the info boxes are simply where I have removed the numbeplate info used for the file names.)

Most worryingly the chap had added matched inlets after the 202 conversion had been completed, so I expect the true figure the car left MG with would have been even lower!

The graph appeared strangely similar to a stock car (albeit lightly tuned), so we pulled up a graph from our database of our own 182 (blue lines) around a year ago for comparison:

The car has none of the characteristic changes in torque delivery I would expect from a different cam profile. I wonder if anything has actually be done internally? The only thing that stops me from comitting to this train of thought 100% is that the car has the characteristic 'tappiness' of a reground cam.

Anyway I have posted this up as it frustrates me more than anything. With this sort of tuning going on no wonder people refer to tuning cars a being a 'mugs game', it not only screws over an individual, it also damages the faith people carry in the industry. :dapprove:

By the time he has bought your package he will have spent well over £3k, maybe he should of SC'd it to begin with....

Completely comical. You have to feel bad for the chap whos paid good money on the promise of good gains.

Assuming his car was similar in delivery to your standard car shown in the graph, its actually lost him 6-7 FtLb of torque right where you need it day to day at 2600rpm.

Indeed that is exactly what is happening. People don't know who to believe any more and decide not to do anything regarding modifications. Everybody looses.
On the other hand, there are several companies on CS.net which have a 100% positive customer feedback and don't sell fairy tales.

Companies like this will always be around extracting money out of unsuspecting customers though. They will come to a proper specialist and get the response for 200bhp your going to need say £2400 for ITB's or slightly less for the RS2 manifold. However they're then going to want the exhaust which is £4-500 for a good one. Then they see an advert for £1600 for 202bhp which includes an exhaust and go for it because they've been lied to about the figures.

I've always took it as red that pumping money into an N/A RS Clio engine will only get you a handful of bhp increase anyway. Still, it is a shame to see such results in the clear light of day. Even I remember seeing the Evo (iirc?) review with the Morego conversion in it and thinking it seemed like a good buy.

Poor sod. :(

False power claims have been common place for years on these pages, mainly in the past not so much now.

All the old ''skool'' users of Cliosport will remember the days when we were told cams, piggyback and a few other mods would get you 200 bhp.

  Evo 5 RS
Reminds me of my mates mk1 escort - spent 1,000 on the engine and in the end it made less than standard power. Dissected it, turned out it had never been opened. Won't name and shame

think with the F4R though it should be written in marble somewhere... trumpets or blower or 200bhp is a no-goer

Ah happy days :) and a filter will get you 5-10
