Just got the 172 back from the garage and have a fail point on " Macpherson strut has excessive movement at the upper attachment".
I noticed this before it went for mot and put in another used topmount I had but the movement was exactly the same .
i have 4 used topmounts lying around from different 172s and all the bearings have some movement in them (they all have lots of play in the hole in the centre too where the brass bush goes down through)and checked a mates the other night and they have the same movement.
Brand new Do these have a 1-2mm gap between the brass central bush and the outer rubber or is it just all the ones I have are knacked .
Theres play in the bearing and also in the centre on at least 6 of these ive looked at and my drivers side is the same but did not fail ??????????????/.
I dont want to go and buy a new one of these untill I know that they are goosed or if the problem lies further down .
