MOT Fail - strut top mounts movement

Just been told my car has failed its MOT as there is too much play in the strut top mounts.

They are definately tight, sounds like the tester has no idea about the natural movement in the top mounts, how am I going to explain that is the design of them if they say its because of movement?

Also said the headlights aren't aligned, I've never touched these, are they easy to align?

Well just picked it up and he's right, movement is side to side, drivers side one is worse than the passenger side as I asked him to show me.

anyone know how much these are for a pair from renault?

IIRC they are silly money, about £50 each!

Headlights are easy to adjust, most places do it for free when having the mot done, there is whote allen key things behind the lights.

how much? its only a bit of rubber!

they wanted to charge me nearly 300 quid to replace the top mounts, I said i'll do it myself ta!

my top mounts are shagged aswell. looking at getting some of the solid ones, about £130 I think, but I'd rarther pay that than £100 for new renualt ones which will start knocking again.

AST's from Kam Racing would be a good option but you might have to wait a few days before you receive them but they are a decent bit of kit for a decent price.

It's hopefully going to cure my knocking struts - for a LOT less than £100.

Just had a look now back at home and both sides needed tightening, drivers side more than passenger so i'm thinking the top mounts aren't shot, rather the nuts were loose.

How can I approach them to check it without having a retest before buying top mounts? needs to be retested before next wednesday!

BTW, just phoned renault and they want £67 plus vat per side, this normal?
