MOT Failed!!! HELP

Took my car to be MOT'd today and it failed on one thing.
When on the ramps, then jacking up the front end, the mot inspector said there was too much play in the front passenger side suspension!:dapprove:

He showed me what he meant. When holding the wheel you can push the wheel and suspension strut up and down and from left to right [ie, front of car towards back of car] He suspects its worn top mounts.

I'm no car expert so anyone on here suggest what it could be?? It was done at the Peugeot franchise in town. The drivers side suspension was fine. No movement.

I've got 10 days to get it fixed and return it to the garage to avoid paying for a retest. not easy when you work all week. Theyre no Renault experts so i said i didnt want them to sort it. They said theyd have to strip all the suspension and check it out from there, cost implied, then advise rectification costs. It took them a hour and a half to do the MOT!!!!!

Anyone help me out next weekend or late evening this week???

we do mots at my work so the 10 day thing is ten working days so you have got till around the 20th of july ! i have never seen a 172 suspention setup so i can suggest any ideas , but if its like the renault 5 with a big top mount with a bearing in it its fairly easy to do, where are you based to?

I dont want to be robbed by a stealership as they will replace everything not required until they get to the part required, then tell me they haven't got one and i'll have to leave my car there for a week til said part comes.

You get the idea. I'd sooner have one of the knowledgable chaps on here sort it.:approve:

Suspension set up is not exactly complicated, jack it up and go have a poke around.

Worn ball joint? If it has had a whack on a kerb or something?

Its not had a whack or anything.

I'm gonna get my mate across the road to have a look tomorrow. He's chief mechanic at one of the Kart racing teams and is pretty clued up. If he's got time that is.....:dapprove:

Keep posting any ideas if you think you might know what it could be.

There is a Renault specialist just round the corner from me, on the back road from Balderton to Coddington. Clinton Motors, they do MOT's too, fitted my Eibachs to my 03' Dynamique. Guys knows his stuff as he's into rallying. Might be worth a call if you get stuck.

I had the same issue at my last mot, inspector passed but told me to get sorted, haven't got round to it yet.

Did you find out what your problem was? Top mounts knackered?

you got washers fitted? i think that could be the cause

if not, its a knackered top mount

yeah i have the washers fitted, sound like it must be a knackered top mount.

Nacked top mount sounds the fauly there only £10 or so from GSF etc.

N/S top mount needed tightening.
