Moving up from a 172?

Car  Cupped 182
Love my 172 but doing so many miles with work at the moment that I need to swap before the milage goes too high, & got a real dilemma what to go for next.

Will have maybe up to eight grand to play with after selling current car (1yr old baby prevents me from justifying spending any more) which I know I could get a decent 182 with reasonably low mileage for, but as I'll probably have the next motor for a couple of years I don't want to make the wrong choice.

Also thought about Type R's although not driven one yet, but not sure if I could get a decent one for that money?

I know it's subjective & depends on lots of factors, but I just wondered if there's something generally regarded as better than a 182 which'll cost around the same to run & insure?

All suggestions welcome

doubt there would be a newish decent type r for 8k

182 might b a good car - but as you have a small child why not somethign for family orientated?

Depends what you mean by step up?

Be it in quality, speed, safety, insurance blah blah blah

If I was in your situation with a new kid etc, which I will be next year :o), I would be going for the safety before anything else.

The Mrs has a Vectra which we use for ferrying said littlun- this would just be for me, for fun & commuting.

ah!

how many miles do you commute?

Work's taking me far & wide at the moment- done 8,000 miles in the last 4-5 months. Don't think it will stay like it, but would be nervous about buying anything with more than high 20's milage at the moment.

Did you have something in mind?

fair bit oh mileage then

tbh clios can last for ages and clock up some serious miles - many people on here have high milers.

id say 182 if you wanna have fun

and maybe some kinda golf gti - bit more robust ansd can clock up serious miles on em

people do tend to go to a turbo , maybe sticking with renault ..... the megane is an option .

others like the civic , vxr , ford st also worth considering imo .

i've done 20k in a year, and only live 8 miles from work, just keep the 172.

my mate just sold his CTR for £7k and it was in vgc.. what about a modeo ST thing? Lot of car for the money..

Or a LCR

dont go for the golf m4 gti if it's fun you want.i had one .got it remaped was pushing out 210bhp .still didn't feel as nippy as the clio 172 .think there just 2 heavy and larddy.....8..9k should get you in to a 225sport got to be worth looking at....

if you've got the vectra for family use then why not go for something like a westfield or caterham

Haha- love it!!!! Would absolutely love to have a play in one of those, but has to be for commuting as well as weekends, so need something a little more tame unfortunately.

Not thought about the Meg though, thanks for that one- For those with experience of the Meg, am I likely to be able to get a half-decent one for the sort of money I can spend though?

If you can stretch to another grand. A 5 door Meg 225?

Fun and practical. Couple coming up for 9k on pistonheads.

Fabia VRS?

Diesel would probably be your best bet if your doing loads of milage?

What about that Rover bus thingy Clart just got?

edit: Timmay beat me to it!

Would a Diesel be out of the question? Just to broaden your spectrum a little, some nice Golf TDi's can be had for less than £8k and roll on forever

I know I'm trying to have my cake & eat it, but I wouldn't want to take a step backwards in terms of performance, which a Golf TDi would probably be, although if I'm honest it's probably the most sensible option.

Would love a DC5, but like I said cannot really go over 8 grand, which looks like it probably rules out the Meg too! (plus stretching it to 9 grand or thereabouts would bring the Clio Trophy into tantalising reach as well- Argh!!).

Last couple of cars before the 172 (which I've only had a short while) have been totally practical choices, which is why I'm being a bit stubborn I guess, but reassured at least from comments above that current 172's probably not going to burst into a ball of flames the second I reach 65,000 miles!!

What about a Leon Cupra (not the R)?

Same as a glf GTI but cheaper being a seat and then chip ready?
