My 172 clio cup cut of and now wont start.

Car  renault clio 172 cup
Hi have just register with clio sport. Bought my first clio 172 cup sport in october last year. I love it to bits. While driving my little Neo the Clio it cut out and it wont start. Just been towed home off the motorway by AA and they think it could be the cambelt does anyone have any ideas what it could be. :(

Hi,

we will need a little more information on what you were doing when it happened, hard accel etc? If its cambelt it's potentially a lot of work or maybe an engine swap, depending on the damage done.

When was the belt last changed?

I was coming off the slip road and i was doing about 20 MPH. Engine light juddered and cut out. Tried to start and the engine was cranking really fast and wont start. When i bought the car the owner told me that the cambelt and pully had been changed. The car has only done 65,000 miles.

Sounds like cambelt to me, i think its spinning over fast as the valves are now bent.

Do you have any paper work to show the belts have been changed?

If I am honest I am not sure. I'm not sure why it would crank faster if the valves were bent? It would still have to turn over and cycle the pistons so there would still be a fair amount of resistance.

As Danny said check the aux belt. That's any easy place to start. If the aux belt goes it is possible for it to catch on the cambelt with obvious results!!

Bit of a silly question but does it have fuel?? Does the fuel pump prime when you turn the ignition on?

Because there is no compression ie the valves would be stuck open when they should be shut.

Yes there would be piston resistance but no where near as much on a compression stroke.

yeah I'm there now, see what you mean.

Thank you everyone for your help. Been on the car today. It seems that the cambelt is fine as it is turning and has all its teeth, as had the cover off and checked it. TDC sensor has also been removed and cleaned. Put more V Power fuel in :p. When tried to start engine it sounded better but still would not start and there was a mis fire from the exhaust. The battery is not flat so it has been put on charge overnight. Any Ideas Please.

The other thing is the cam/crank sprockets can slip as they are "free wheeling"
This can happen if the fixings for them was not replaced when doing the belt.

My poor car. It is still not going. Cleaned sensor, checked cambelt. Bought a new sensor to see if that works. Fingers crossed.

We are in South Yorkshire. No not checked the cam timing. My car won't even start. Tried bump starting it but still wont not go. When it was cold it lost power and juddered for about 3 months before it would not start. Twice it would not start but started soon after. I think that was because the key was left in the engine as i think i read something along these lines in the manual.:(

You dont need it to start to check the timing.

Become a payed member it will be money well spent.

Does anyone know anywhere i can down load diagrams of where timing belts are and how to remove them on a clio 172 cup sport 2002
