My 182 failed MOT miserably! - Tesco fuel? - PASSED now ;-)

Took it in for the MOT yesterday and thought it might fail on a cracked numberplate but it didn't fail on that, it failed on emissions, apparently carbon monoxide was 5x the limit.

Also discs on front were too worn so have to get those replaced and the car booked into renault to find the emissions problem, CAT maybe?

Not sure if it will be covered under warranty but i'm going to push for it as i have been in twice about my exhaust in the cars life so they have done a bit of messing with it and if its anyones fault it would be theirs.

Also had advisory's of rear pads wearing and nail in rear tyre.

Pretty gutted tbh as i thought it would fly through the first MOT, emissions was the last thing i thought it would fail on and i thought my discs were ok too.

They tell me i need to replace the pads with discs, is this really necessary as the pads are pretty new and so have a good 10k miles left on them?

Re: My 182 failed MOT miserably!

id say new pads too. id imagine your pads were shaped by your currents disks. i can only imagine youd get some bad braking for a while untill your pads rewore in!

gutted btw!

Re: My 182 failed MOT miserably!

my emissions lights been coming on, and i took it into renault before and they said nothing wrong. since then i've had a milltek fitted...so doubt they would accept if i brought it back in and asked them to sort it again. but you've got me worried!!!!!!

Re: My 182 failed MOT miserably!

Probably a faulty cat mate. Someone i know's cat went on their 182 (54 plate, standard exhaust) and was covered under warranty.

An excuse to upgrade to some shiny new brakes? ;)

Re: My 182 failed MOT miserably!

out of interest did you get the emissions light up alot dave? if your cars still under warranty cant see them not replacing it.

Re: My 182 failed MOT miserably!

Lol, my emissions light isnt on, but my exhaust stinks without the cat!

Surely wouldnt pass?
Put it back on just to be safe for mine.

emission light has never lit up.

The only sign i had that has made sense now is my exhaust runs pretty black so that sort of makes sense now, black exhaust, carbon monoxide but no warning light.

LOL, had PF97 pads and brembo discs and they were bloody good but the dust ruined my car so have since gone back to standard renault pads and stopping power is fine for the road.

Re: My 182 failed MOT miserably!

Have heard a few stories about corrosive dust with performance friction pads, ruin the paintwork on your wheels?

yes, and down the whole side of the car.

and that was with washing it regularly, like once every 1-2 weeks!

Re: My 182 failed MOT miserably!

Sounds like that could be an 02 sensor problem
sorry, i am not technical minded with cars, what does this mean please?

Is it an easy fix? (or a cheap one at least? ;) )

thanks in advance!

Re: My 182 failed MOT miserably!

My Cup failed its first MOT with a handbrake that wasn't tightly secured onto the floor (I never honestly noticed though!) and my rear brakes weren't up to much...had the handbrake mounting bolts tightened, and rear pads replaced...sailed through. I know what you mean though Dave as I thought she'd sail through her 1st MOT...but was devastated...lucky as it was only a couple of quid to put right! Lesson learnt for October this year!

Re: My 182 failed MOT miserably!

mine turns 3 in June, I've replaced front pads once (at around 25k miles) having now done 32k miles.

Front disc inside face is corroded so new front discs and pads soon, handbrake went slack recently and its down to the rear discs and pads being shot.

Got new renault rears to go on, gonna get brembo / ds2500 for the front.

I've had an oxygen sensor replaced under warranty when my emissions light came on, my cat now has a big rusty hole in it and no emissions light coming on lol.

Also got a bulge in one of my tyres so I'll need 2 new PE2s before June too.

Oh well its great fun!

Re: My 182 failed MOT miserably!

Don't pay Renault prices for discs mate, try these...

http://www.brakeparts.co.uk/

I would DIY too.

:)
does that site provide the OEM parts or are they cheapo ones?

the prices look good, just wouldn't be able to fit them myself, have seen it done and its not something i could do, will get a local independant to do it so would be good if I could get the parts myself as on there they come to £75 and a renault specialist quoted £120 for the parts + labour.

I like the renault parts though, good wear and good road performance.

Re: My 182 failed MOT miserably!

I nearly failed my mot on emissions due to exhaust blowing.

10 minutes to fix and emissions were normal.

I know bugger all about either, i just copy what everyone else posts and pass it off as fact.:D

In fact the last post was my own.lol. Check for blowing on the exhaust, does it sound louder than usual?

Re: My 182 failed MOT miserably!

does it smell eggy at times too? if so possible cat issue.

There's an oxygen (lambda) sensor before the cat and one after it, one of these failed on mine causing the emission light to come on now and again, got it warrantied without any quibbles - as usual.

not really, no.

hopefully, renault will find the problem on saturday and it will either be covered by warranty or be very cheap.

Re: My 182 failed MOT miserably!

i filled up with tesco 99 ron in chichester the week before the MOT test........

I hope this isn't what has caused this, renault are looking at it on saturday, not sure whether to mention it or not as then it definitely won't be covered by the warranty!

Dave, You may stand more chance of getting your money back from Tesco. Have a look for your petrol receipt and hold on to it.
