My 2006 S2K

I thought it was about time I created a thread on my cherished S2000. I bought the car 7 years ago from Honda in Crewe. It was a standard Moonrock 2006 GT model with 20k on the clock. It was relatively clean having only two previous owners.

The car was bought by myself before Honda had chance to put it on their site. Good ones are hard to come by so you have to be quick.

Fast forward to today and the car now has 44k on the clock. Its very recently been treated to a respray, new mohair hood, refurbished wheels (I wanted to retain the OEM wheels but decided on a change of colour), underseal and full machine polish/ceramic coat.

I’ll let the pictures do the talking…

The day I bought it (Honda Pics)…

*Take note of the colour change, the colour changes at every angle...

What can I say about the car? I love it to bits. I have thought about selling it for something else but I just can’t bring myself to do it. I enjoy it as much today as the day I bought it. It might not be the quickest thing on the road but the way it drives is second to none. It may be relatively old in age but from a drivers perspective it packs a massive punch. Every time I go for a drive it never fails to put a smile on my face.

My goal was to restore the car back to its best and after investing a considerable amount of time and money in the car I feel I’m just about there. There’s a couple of things I’d like to do in addition (retrimmed steering wheel for example and potentially a few engine mods) but other than that I’m made up with the finished article.

The car is completely dent, stone chip, and scratch free. This is a bold statement but I truly believe I have one of the best kept S2000s in the country.

I’ll add to the thread as and when I buy new bits and bobs for her…

Work completed to date…

Respray = Prospray, Warrington
Mohair Hood = Soft Top Shop, Stockport
Detail = Finer Details, Rochdale
Full Underseal & All Servicing Needs = I.N. Motors, Wettenhall
Wheel Refurb = Wheel Specialist, Manchester
Complete Geo/fast road Setup = Center Gravity, Atherstone
New Windscreen = National Windscreens, Trafford

Thanks for looking.

Its every bit as pretty with the hood/roof up as it is down, really is a lovely looking car!

Cheers fella!

They're not actually too bad these days. I pay £500 with Flux (garaged, 8k per annum, full ncb, no accidents or convictions).

Regarding the respray. It was done in two stages at the same place. Prosprays work is exceptional but quality comes at a price. There's no Honda paint left on it which is a good thing IMO as its OEM Honda paint is pretty poor. If you look at the detailers pics you'll see it looks a completely different colour under different light.

Just noticed centre gravity did the setup. They did the kws on my m3, expensive but superb.

Good question mate. I'd expect a similar age car in reasonable condition to go for £12k+. I paid £16k for mine 7 years ago, I'd not sell mine for a penny less but then a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

A lot have either been stuffed, poorly maintained or abused. Prices are rising and have been for a couple of years.

Honda (Crewe) have tried to buy mine off me numerous times touting it as the best they've seen.

I'd like to get a proper impression of these, I've only been out in one once and it was absolutely pouring with rain so couldn't go for it really, but they do have a certain something about them.

Me and a mate in his S2k were at Spa last year , he went out with an instructor who's first words were . There are 2 types of S2k's ones that have crashed and ones that are about to crash . Made me chuckle .

They can be twitchy but then that's part of the enjoyment. Most left Honda with incorrect geo so the first thing to do is get it properly setup. With the right tyres and dry(ish) conditions you can really push on. That's part of the enjoyment, when you're on it and you get it right there isn't many other similarly priced cars that are as enjoyable.

Haha!

They definitely need respect. The back end will quite happily step out without much effort. The OEM tyres need lots of heat before they're sticky enough to be pushed. You just need the talent to be able to correct a slide when it occurs lol. It took me a good couple of years to fully learn the cars capabilities.

The thing with this car is its not fast, just massively enjoyable. A true drivers car IMO.

My uncle loves them and wants another but he's got young twins at the moment so a two seater isn't on the cards!
Hopefully at some point he'll get another so I can have a proper experience.

The car looks great!

Going to pick my car up from Prospray tomorrow, great to hear some more good feedback about them even if I've only had some less obvious bits done (holes in the boot floor, skirt coming loose). Plenty more work there for them when funds allow.

I go past that dealer most days expecting to see a new Type R parked up but it's not happened yet.

They are second to none mate...I wouldn't take my car anywhere else. It says a lot when a company doesn't need to advertise their work. They are expensive but faultless. They do spray work for Formula 1 teams I believe.

If you see Andy or Matt when you pick up your car tell them that Alex says hi.

I'd prefer it with silver wheels but the rest is excellent

And that...... in a nutshell is why I want one. There is simply nothing comparable to it. It's not been replaced. It has an engine that the current turbo generation believes fell off The Ark and it's totally impractical to any bloke who's put his reproductive loins to good use.

It shouldn't exist - but it does. It's special without being shouty. Quick without being insane. Yet provoke it or be heavy-handed and it will kick you in the b****cks. It's a fun car, yet serious too. To me its a mixing pot of everything that's appealing about a car purely for driving's sake. It can even have the roof down for those 1.35 days per year that its not raining in the North West.

Brilliantly put mate, I couldn't have put it better myself! Ever considered a career in motor journalism :)?

Definitely buy one if you can. One things for sure, you certainly won't lose any money on it.

It was a tough call fella but I fancied a change and didn't think it would be worth spunking £400 on a colour that from afar would look no different.

I'll probably go back to silver next time they need a refurb :)

Im a Honda fan so obviously I really like them and they are a lovely set up piece of kit.
My wife adores them but insurance and tax is a bit of an issue and when we looked at all the negatives we chose a civic as the s2000 would have to be a 2nd car for us.
I'd still like one though.

Absolutely lovely.

Every time I talk myself out of one I see something that really makes me change my mind! I need to drive one.

That is stunning, the only word I can use for the paint job as far as the photos can show
I've had two EP3 Civic Type-R's (actually just sold my 05 plate Cosmic Grey to make room for my new toy Clio 182) but that's as close as I've got, never been out in an S2000 and know its obviously a totally different beast..... VTEC is still fun tho
What a compliment too about the Honda dealer wanting to buy it......... when you say how much you love it etc, I think those statements answer the question of whether you should sell it or not haha when you've spent so much to get it so nice and you know the car so well, would be silly to change for something and start all over again.......... would be different if you were bored with it of course

If you get chance then definitely invest in one, I'm not sure you can lose out financially as they just seem to be increasing in value.

I'm thinking about getting an FN2 as a second car. Only thing that puts me off is the lack of doors as the wife to be and I are looking to start a family soon.

Mine just crept into the higher tax bracket but then I'm used to paying £500 because I've had it so long. Insurance has dropped massively over the last few years. No idea why, may be because they're aren't so many around and those that do exist are now owned by people who tend to cherish them.

Thanks matey, the paint job is truly spectacular. I can't thank Prospray enough, they really went to town on it. If you're ever in need of any body shop work then definitely consider them. I'd not use anyone else having seen their work (even if I lived on the other side of the country).

The S2000 is definitely unique. It's a great example of a car that you don't necessarily have to drive at warp speed to get enjoyment from. Seven years on it still gives me as much enjoyment as it did the day I picked it up.

I'm not sure I'll ever sell it in truth. May be i'll replace it with a Porsche or Lotus one day but it's not something I'm willing to entertain at the minute having invested so much time and money in it.

If you get chance then please give one a whirl. I appreciate the characteristics of the engine won't be for everyone but for the average driving enthusiast they certainly hit the mark.

Thank you.

Agreed! With the K20 and general VTEC engines, people always seem to comment on how you have to thrash them to get the power....... but I don't agree, they are a responsive engine at the best of times and as you said, for an average driving enthusiast, they hit the mark! I mean i'm no Damon Hill, but my Civic certainly put a smile on my face when I took it around Snetterton on a track evening...... but obviously when you hit 5,800 (is it the same in the S2000?) and the VTEC kicks in, it's at it's best haha
