My Clio and the Stars!

  2004 1.5 DCi 80 Dyna
Went out doing some star trail pictures last night in the middle of the Lake District and thought it would be rude not to take a pic of the car.

Exposure time: 30 minutes, F8 @ 10mm (fisheye). car illuminated with torch for 5 seconds...

and one more of the star trail pics I did,

total exposure time: 1hr, F8 @ 10mm animal feeder illuminated for 8 seconds with torch...

Love it! Always wanted to try these sorts of shots, but dont really have the patience lol.

Only thing I dont like is the wide angle distortion :(

They're some cool shots, best I've seen in the clio media section for a while.

I'd be a bit bored waiting for an hour though!

Cheers, its pretty easy really, set the camera up, leave it on a tripod, then go back to the car and watch a film for however long on the mp3 player.

Although the car one was different, I had to lie back in the darkness in the car so not to add any light to the image, I even had to cover up the bloody bright red flashing light on the dash.

Was good fun driving back and 2.30am through the lakes on deserted roads, I saw 2 Badgers lol:D

He's told you the settings above each photo. The camera needs to have a 'bulb' mode which is usually found on shutter priority mode after the 30 second setting. You will also need a remote capable of being used with this mode.

put camera (Nikon D300) on tripod, set to full manual control. I have a contraption that presses the shutter and will hold it open (in bulb mode) for however long you set it to. I could if I had a big enough battery pack, set it to a continuous 100hrs.

Set the F stop to F8 no higher really as you start to drown out the light of the stars, however any lighter and the foreground will illuminate by the available light of the sky (even though you think its pitch black).

Set the white balance to tungsten as this adds a blue filter to the image which helps to keep the orange light pollution down.

Go and make a cuppa

Thats about it lol.

Very nice. Good to see someone trying different things with the car pics now.

I had a play trying to do smoe of these but as my bulb is limited to 5mins at a time I couldnt be arsed to do them properly as I would have had to chop them together.
