My Flame Red 172

  2003 Clio 172 Sport
Hi all,
So after having some fun in my Civic MB6, I decided I wanted to be back in a 3 door, proper sporty hot hatch. Seeming as I had bought the other half a focus as a daily toddler taxi, the MB6's size and number of doors was no longer necessary  So a few days ago I traded it for this:

It really was on a whim, knowing nothing about french cars, let alone cliosport's. She's on 120k and has very little in the way of paperwork but the MOT history has come back clean as has the history check. The previous owner said it has a full k-tec stealth exhaust and uprated cams. It certainly seems very quick and sounds very throaty but until I can confirm myself, I'm taking this with a pinch of salt. Even though the honda was fun, this is in a completely different league, so much quicker, alot more torque, and far better handling which makes the MB6 a disappointment considering it had new coilovers, lightweight alloys (azev A's) decent rubber, Larger ARB's, strut brace and an LSD! The clio just 'feels' 4 years newer and alot more special to be in. Plus being back in a 3 door hatch feels much more at home that the large MB6. The pics are as I picked it up, no wash, no polishing or waxing and it still looks pretty sharp, so can't wait to get stuck into the paintwork! Which by the way is 99% faultless with 2 tiny pinhead dents and a small 'paint crease' on the rear bumper. Now as I said I'm a complete rookie to the Clio RS so any common tricks/tips/info will be greatly appreciated but on my to do list so far is:
-Complete cambelt kit and aux belt
-Water pump
-Dephaser pulley (tapping slightly when idling)
-Every filter renewed
-Every fluid renewed
-A good session with the DAS-6!:buffer:

I don't want to heavily modify the aesthetics of the 172 as I think Renault have got it almost bang on with the styling, especially in this colour but I'd rather spend my money making sure the maintenance is spot on and optimizing the already fantastic handling and performance.

Any tips or info is welcome :thumb:

You absolutely right about the colour! I love that colour, very striking and neat.

Not much I can suggest in the way of modifications, although, if you like the standard look, maybe start by removing the yellow tinted fog light covers?
Interesting that your 172 has Projector headlights yet it got through its MoT perfectly fine. I was under the impression that 172s came with headlight washers as standard and were required to pass an MoT?

No mater, a good find :)

Thanks,
Ross

  Many.
Looks good, Yellow fogs aren't to my taste, but a good base for a project.

Get the belts etc done by a specialist, trust me and the rest of the forum on that one. Where abouts are you? Can suggest somebody decent.
FuSSionZ theres no need for headlight washers for MOT, just for type approval when they were new.

AlexW So in theory no car needs washers for an MoT? I'm just wondering because I'm considering changing my 1.2s headlights to Xenons and just wanted to be clear on the guidelines ;)
Thanks,
Ross

Lovely buy! Cannot beat a shiny flamer! If you decide to sell the alloys I'd buy them, I also have the original 172 alloys ;)

FuSSionZ I may well sell the wheels to fund some nice light wheels, they have 4 all but new proxies on them ;) as for the fogs I'm ripping the yellow off, doesn't suit the colour at all. I think the only legal requirement with xenons is that they're a projector type light and levelled correctly? Alex yes definitely getting it done by a specialist, wouldn't normally but have read it's really the only option, I'm in Plymouth seems like there's only 1-2 specialists down here. Is £240 a good price for a full cambelt kit, new dephaser pulley and water pump a good price (all genuine parts)?

I will do. Anyone got any recommendation on lightweight alloys? I like the style that the trophy comes with so trying to stick to oem look

So folks, been pricing up the Dephaser, Cam belt and water pump. It will cost £335 (inc vat) for labour alone from a local specialist (is this figure about right?) Then a Gates cam belt kit and Febi waterpump will cost £114 and a renault dephaser approx £110 so all in = £550 give or take a couple quid. Is this a good figure, too low or too high?

  A special one.
In what way? Parts or labour? A couple posts I've seen on here have paid approx £600 for theirs to be done.

Sorry i was being a dick and didn't read it right. Thought it was £550 + £335

£550 all in is good, do they have the Renault locking tools, all 3 parts?

Id use a Renault water pump.

Ah Ok. Well they're a Renault specialist so I'd hope so. I'm going to ring Renault too just to see what they're price is but no doubt they'll want to pull my pants down and take me for everything I've got

In Devon (plymouth) I'm more than happy to do a reasonable road trip if there was someone good at the right price elsewhere

Small update. I found a local Auto Finesse stockist in Newton Abbot :D so had a nice blast along the country roads to get there and came away with a small haul of goodies

And right on cue, my MAP sensor died on me in the car park, a quick look I discovered this:

The rubber bung was missing so the cheapo previous owner decided to try and use foam sticky pad to remedy the very loose fitting :( ('cause we all know glue sticks to hot metal right?......) so I had a nice mile walk to the nearest motor factors that was open (Mill) and £60 later my 172 was starting like a dream, it also doesn't hesitate low revs like it used to. Also, a huge bonus is that the TC and ABS lights which were on, have turned off! I've also ordered my cambelt, waterpump and dephaser etc so that should arrive soon and I'll have a smooth running, rattle free 172 :)

So. Since doing my MAP sensor, the ESP and SERV light has stayed off, but yesterday, upon first startup the EML would flash for a couple mins then disappear. But no fault codes stored. Today the EML stayed on and gave p0300. Worth checking/replacing plugs, packs etc?

Cars nice good find. I use to have an MB6 to was fun but clio like you say is much more fun pulls better I feel without too much effort. Start with the cheaper options regards your faults would be my advice? I'm no too clued up on the electric side of things with these cars hope you get it sorted.

Thanks bud going to have a look at the plugs later and take it from there. Does anyone know where I can get a champion f136 or as close to? Struggling to find them

Ok another update in my quest to solve the infamous lumpy idle/ random misfire issue. Decided to service the clio today, opted for NGK plugs, 5w40 Fully Synth. oil and a MANN oil filter. So I took off the injector rail cover to find this:

Am I right in thinking that open hole should not be urm.....open?

When swapping out the plugs I noticed the previous owner again went down the El Grande Cheapo route and put in Bosch Super 4's :( Anyways, put the correct plugs in, new filter, new oil and after the Mrs focus jump started me, the car fired up to it's usual lump idling self. The car sounds much smoother and alot of the noise previously heard from the dephaser has quietened right down?. Plugged her in and still got p0300, tried to clear it but it wouldn't for some odd reason. Turned her off, ignition again and cleared the code, switched her off and that's where I'm at. Next going to try coil pack but after alot of reading, I'm not holding my breath as it could be a huge list of thing casing this lumpy idle and p0300 code. Worth noting it doesn't cut out at all, and will idle lumpy all day long with no other hiccups so to speak.

  Many.
That is where the fuel pressure regulator goes on a Ph1, renault just didn't bother changing the casting.

Depending how bad your misfire is, it could be dephaser/incorrect cam timing anyway. Coilpack/leads are common, as are injectors.

You can't clear codes while its running, thats pretty normal across a lot of cars.

Yeah I realized that after my 'Doh' moment. Well I'll replace a few more bits before it goes in for the dephaser, it can't hurt.

Ok folks some small updates. P0300 code has gone. Haven't bought much in the way of mods just some little bits to keep me ticking as I'm saving for the dephaser, belts etc to be done, most likely by Dan @ SJM. Was toying with the idea of doing it myself but getting stage fright about it haha. The lack of splitter was annoying me and right before forking out for a Renault item, found the posts about fabia ones. So picked this up for a mere tenner:

Want some decent weather now to get it on :) Also the mrs pads and discs needed doing, and the clio came with some pads so thought why not. I remembered how annoying it is trying to wind a caliper back with pliers so thought I'd give this little gem a go:

The head is adjustable and the handle has stepped increments to make an all in one spanner. Only £3 so if it's pants no bother but if it works, happy days :)

Yes I did have it on swapz as the cost of the dephaser etc really threw me off :( But in all honesty I can't part with it! Plus I've just got a new job that pays double what I was on so there's no excuses now so the clio will be staying! Mr partner will hate me for it as she doesn't see the pint in forking out £££ on it but hey ho. Moving forward, I've just bought some materials to do a mini front end re-fresh. Pics to follow :)
