My HUGE dilema.. Head v heart!

  54 Clio 182 2.0
I'm so confused about my new 182, if anyone has seen my posts they'l understand !

So i bought it neer enough 2 weeks ago, i thought it was the best £3150 i had ever spent!

(55k miles Black new breaks new tires and new backboxes!)

As i was excited my head decided to leave my shoulders and i bought it without thinking about the important things.. Cam belt & Aux belt change due)

Now i have discovered 2 and a half new problems !!

1. Rear shocker leaking
2. Wierd ABS/ESP problem (assuming sensor behind steering wheel)
1/2. Service due at 60 k

So, Do i sell and get another 182 (hopefully getting my money back) with all the boxes ticked?? (obviously other problems may arrise wich could be more severe than the current ones but then maybe i could get one that was 100%)

Or Do go with my heart andand repair everything??

I have been quoted by Birchhall neer enough £600 for service and both belts. (hoping aswell i dont need a new dephaser!!

Im assuming the sensor behind thee wheel could cost me neer enough 150 with labour? maybe more?

Rear shockers (pair) would be around the same £150??

So what should i do i'm really stressing out now someone shed me some light :(

cheers guys!

Stefan

1) Old cars break
2) Old cars break
3) Should have done a bit of research

Just get it fixed if it's an otherwise good car. Whatever else you buy could be much much worse.

So you knew it needed a cambelt .. that money should have already been accounted for when you bought it.

A week on here sees about 3 threads with "my car doesnt go round corners/i've discovered i've got leaking rear shocks" as the main plot.

Buy a new pair or rear shocks and fit them yourself. Not very expensive really. Or, get your upgraditis over early and get some coilovers .. don't get the supercheapy ones that are about. You'll end up buying twice...

What's the ABS fault ? If it's just had new brakes, maybe one of the sensors on one corner of the vehicle has had a knock and needs a wiggle... what sensor would have gone behind the steering wheel !? :S

If you get it fixed then you know exactly where you stand, if you buy another car, you could have all kinds of other problems.

Keep it, get it fixed. No question.

Things will continue to break on it even after you have swapped everything. All part of the fun.

I see people are making me out to be a mug, but i have only had 2 cars a T reg Seat arosa, (nothing mechanical went wrong) just fell appart asthetically and the 182 so excuse me for posting my worries on a pritty big investment for a 21 year old earning less than 12 k a year. - Anyways where would i find these sensors you speak of? Constructive posts are very much appreciated as this is my sole method of finding out about cars in general appart from going to the mechanic!

If you know nothing about it mate, your best bet is to take it to a specialist. I'm sure they'll happily give you a break down of what they're doing.

The abs problem is most likely an abs ring or a sensor that has been damaged during the brake change.

I bought my car with a few problems, i knew about them all before i bought it so got it for a good price. I'm now in a position where i know exactly what has been done / needs doing (at least until the next thing breaks)

Keep it and fix it.

Better the devil you know and all that....

Edit: why does the forum edit (u.n.til) to (until) ??

The ABS sensors are on the brakes .. they look at the ABS ring which rotates with the brake disc. The ring has teeth on it, the sensors basically count teeth, and if one is reading zero, and the other 3 are reading more than zero, it tells the ABS system one is locked.

Why do you think there is a sensor behind the dash which is faulty ?

Where are you based .. ? There's plenty of RenaultSport specialists who will be able to diagnose your problems around the country...

If the car is in good nick otherwise, then do a LOT of research on here and get it fixed.

Beware though - things go wrong on all cars and you will have to spend money at times on a 182. It's worth learning the basics and saving yourself pennies and if you do you'll end up knowing more about your car than your local grease monkey.

OK i've had a look through your old posts .. get it taken to a specialist for diagnostics...

By ABS fault, I assumed you meant that it didn't work or it kicked in too early... it looks like you turn a corner and the brakes appear to be applying themselves for whatever reason ?

Where was the work done before you bought it ?! Something's not right with that car...

cars cost money, period.

More "specialist" cars, they cost even more.

Absolutely no sense in chopping yours in though, unless you go back to another motorised shopping trolley. With used cars, there's a strong likelihood you're buying somehting that was off-loaded because of problems it had.

Oh, and when people start banging on about "mod this, mod that", remember that bit where you said you're 21 on £12k, insurance tax et al come around very quickly. Which would you rather have, a lump of money to put towards running your car for another year, or a 40mm drop in ride height?

In summary - Just get it fixed, and don't start trying to get clever with it :)

Tbh any second hand car can have faults. My 182 was 2 years old when the rear shocks went. Just keep it

fix it, you have got the car at a good price IMO. Now spend a little cash making it a great example that you know is in a good mechanical state!

Its fairly likely to be the ring on the rear hub, they can come adrift sometimes. The shock absorbers are a doddle to change. I put new rears on mine last year. As long as you have a decent set of tools and plenty of WD40 to help the bolts if the threads are tight. Don't force the bottom bolts if they are tight, just give them plenty of lubrication and work them in and out a bit more each time until they come out easily otherwise you may snap the bolts. On replacement, put a smear of copper grease on the threads. The ABS ring can be glued back in place if its loose, its an interference fit on the hub. Just clean the mating faces up with a bit of emery paper and use a drop of super glue to hold it in place.
