My Iceberg 172 Thread

  TTRS & V50
Well as I’ve decided to keep my clio for a good while I thought it appropriate to start a blog.

SL370132up.jpg

So it started off back in June 2008 where I was interested in selling up my Saxo VTR which I had for 12 months. So I put it up for sale on auto trader, not fussed weather it sold or not. 2 days later some one came down from Nottingham and bought it there and then for 2800. Not bad considering I did 20k in it and paid 2850 for it 12 months previous.

I was on the look out for a VTS as an upgrade but just turning 20 the insurance wasn’t very good in my own name. Did so many quotes and I rattled it down to 1200 fully comp which was the same as my VTR a years previous. I just happened to try a quote on a clio sport 172 by chance and it came back to 1250 fully comp. So that was my decision then, on the look out for a clio sport. To say I was happy was an understatement.

Went to view one in Biggleswade and it looked spot on, but seemed a little cheap, he said it had 3 owners or something and it had just had 1k spent on cambelt, aux belt and brakes all round. I did a HPI check and it came back as 7 owners. I knew something was dodgy.

Couple days passed after looking every minute I got spare on Auto Trader, cliosport.net, Ebay and Pistonheads. I then came across DScars in Lichfield. So took a trip up there to view an iceberg 172. Showroom was mint, so many RS’s there and the one I was looking at seemed perfect. Went out in it and everything ticked my boxes. Only down side was I couldn’t drive it as I wasn’t 21 he said. Put a deposit down and went up 2 days later to pick it up.

So it started from there.

Well yeah at the time it was a good price, and then with the fanicial climate changed, so if i hung on a few months i could have got it a tiny bit cheaper. But at the time, it was a good deal imo. Plenty of plans, this was back in 2008, will update.

Looks clean mate, nice.

What you got planned, if anything?

As above. Will update until current situ.

Best colour imo ;)

What's the plans ?

Erm, yeah to be fair i was after iceberg. So i am happy, although i wouldn't say its the best colour.

Re: My Iceberg 172 Thread Part 2

I wanted to lower it straight away as it did look quite high so that was first thing on the list.

I looked about on here for ages and looking at how different clios sat, was looking primarily at Eibachs as I had them on the saxo and they were amazing springs. I didn’t feel they dropped how I wanted the clio to look so I bought some Apex (bad mistake). And me and my mate fitted them at work at the bodyshop I worked at.

SL370206p.jpg

Well as I lived in the middle of nowhere, these springs were woeful, every single bit of road was shuddering through my back. They were basically awful, but I loved how it sat height wise, so they were kept on for the meanwhile.

Well it came to October time and was on about 65k. Seeing as I was on a 02 plate and reading many peoples opinions on here I felt it was time to change the cambelt and aux belt. Shopped about everywhere to get the cheapest price. It turned out that Ben from Angleworks was doing a cambelt service deal for an unbeatable price. So I booked the clio in there…

Well how shall I explain this but Angelworks was a thriving company at the time and seemed to get many great reviews until my unfortunate experience with them (see thread http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=380881)

After that fiasco which went on for sometime I set up a FK Konigsport group buy. Which unfortunately I had to pull of of because of the rising Angelworks bill. But coilovers were still definally on the list of must mods when the money was available.

So the new year came about and after more browsing on CS I loved the look of ¾ plates. But I wasn’t going to risk it so I got the next best thing and went for the full width version. And touch wood is still on now with no fines pending.

DSC_0044.jpg

Also at the start of the year I noticed Tigger setting up a group buy for matched inlets. I heard good things about these from what AWT did. Luckily Tigger set them up with Jam-Sport, which was only down the road. So I booked in for matched inlets and two rolling roads, before and after. So I booked the day off work and dropped my car off. I didn’t stick about as they were quite busy. But upon my return I was told my car made 167bhp at the fly as standard, which I was very pleased about as I thought my standard exhaust was blowing like a b**ch. The after figure came back at 175bhp, so a nice health increase. The jouney back I was very pleased with the results, I forgot what it felt like before, but I remember it being a very noticeable increase.

  TTRS & V50
Nice! Did you ever get things sorted with Ben?

No mate. A moderator chose to lock the thread, and nothing got sorted, hey ho. Its a year later now. Last service, something else AWT had done was noticed causing me a missfire. Something along the lines of torque wrench and sparkies...

Re: My Iceberg 172 Thread Part 4

It got to about february time and I had funds for some coilovers again. So I set up a new FK highsport group buy this time, which fell through due to the pound and euro going tits up, so it wasn’t fanacially worth it for the company I was dealing with. But they mentioned about a new brand called V-maxx that were very big in the V-dub scene. I thought I would give the brand a try considering the company was offering them at 300 quid posted. So a saving of 100 pounds. These were tuv approved and had a 2 year warrenty, so can't be all bad.

The group buy turned out very successful and I had a set of V-maxx turn up to my house.

I looked about to see who could fit them for me and after speaking to numorous people I opted to pop to Freds house as I was near the area. So he got on with fitting them and seemed very impressed at first instance. He couldn’t set them up but got them near enough. Got them wound down all the way at the back and then tried to match with the front. Once they were fitted I let him take it out for spin after a couple hours of talking and being in the knowledge of how he does trackday tuition in Lambos. This put me at ease. So first round about that comes up he got a bit sideways should I say ;)

So these went to a member in Nottingham;
DSC_0003-.jpg

And off I trotted back to Northampton with a new suspension set up that got the thumbs up from Fred. So first real review of this new brand was great. Especially for their money and having driven a Clio with Fks Highsports, im glad the group buy fell through and I got these.

V-maxx have seemed to rocket on to the forum now with 2 group buy since the first one I set up.

Results;

At the time I was happy with the height, but after about a week, i knew the front needed to come down more.

Re: My Iceberg 172 Thread Part 5

Since Christmas 2008 I was searching for a cup spoiler, because I think they finish off the rear really well and add a sporty feel. As many of you know these are like gold dust. But in april I got lucky and typer_driver off here was splitting his cup so I got in there and nabbed the spoiler for 125 quid. Bargain I thought. It was in blue but as I was working at a bodyshop this was no problem and I got it sprayed iceberg for next to nothing.

DSC_0138.jpg

After having the coilovers on for a month or two I felt they had time to settle and it was needing a geometry, so I took it to jamsport to do a full set up, getting the m to wind the front down another 10mm too. Camber was set up to -1.75 which I was told was great for turn in. So the drive back from Jam-sport I was extremely impressed with how it drove, absolutely spot on. Apart from a minor hiccup which was corrected the following day.

Re: My Iceberg 172 Thread Part 6

It got to the end of may and I saw a Ktec stealth system up for sale in Northampton side of Birmingham. It had only done 500 miles and seemed in mint condition, I was in need of an exhaust as my standard one was blowing badly. So I scooped that up for 225 quid and fitted it the following day at work.

First thoughts… absolutely s**t fit. Was hanging so badly, and this was after putting two new mounts on the centre and back box.

Next day I tried again by putting two sockets on the rear mount to lift it. It looked a lot better but now it was bashing the heat shield with every bump i hit, so i took the sockets back out. I then adjusted it to the best I could, by literally pushing it up against the heat shield and doing up the bolts. Still not impressed, but I put up with the sag and the drone (http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=424714).

Insurance renewal came around with another years no claims bonus and now got it down to 700 fully comp.

It got to July just after the French car show and I still wasn’t happy with the height, and I had an issue with the V-maxx rear shocks coming out of their rubber mount so a quick fix with a large washer holding the shock on the bush. This was then resolved with a new design on the rear shock which V-maxx sent out to every cusomter that ordered them. I took a trip up to Pepsi in derby to wind the front coilovers down another 10mm and to fit my revised rear shocks.

Now I was very happy with how it looked.

Bit of summer driving..

love it

Cheers, appreciate it.
still love your car mate, think its my new favourite iceberg since d4niel sold his on :(

how you find the vmaxx out of interest?
I did love d4n1els. Vmaxx are super to be fair, can only compare against fk highsports, but they are better than that. Fred also rated them when he fitted them. Done about 10k with them and been over to France and they are still holding up well.

good to know - thanks, im looking at the minute for a set and trying to work out what to spend. vmaxx have sounded pretty good from what ive read, for the price especially, but not sure whether to spend a bit more and get b14's or kw's.

Haven't updated this in a while, well it went BTM to get some track rod ends and inner rod ends and also for a wheel refurb, unfortunately they weren't ready before i went to bonny scotland.

Then this happened http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=497535 and it went back to BTM.

I then got it back about a month ago now and gave it a good old clean which is hard living in a city centre, so only happens when i go back home.

Back in January someone kindly slid into me in the snow and drove off overnight - http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=477387

So since then the car has looked a little worse for wear..

So after i put up a neglected thread up - http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=509925 jordan172 off here let me know about a iceberg wing i had been looking for since january, rang them up instantly and bought it 5 mins later. A very happy customer.

Got it sent to my home address straight away as i had no tools at uni. Cracking service, they sent it next day delivery and my dad assured me it was very well packaged.

Anyway when i got the chance to go home next i set about fitting it. (please don't do this without taking the side skirts off and having battered sills, was a mission)

Very happy i have got the wing sorted for the fraction of the price the body shop would have wanted for a new wing, paint and blend.

So a HUGE thank-you to jordan172.

Also should be picking up my oz f1's next week from fred and getting mot and service. 2 years strong now.

  TTRS & V50
Made a trip to BTM today to do a few 'tings, some a little unfortunate but oh well.

Picked up these badboys after months of dust..

DSC_0726-2.jpg

and also this from farmers skoda

DSC_0737-2.jpg

not sure when i'll put it on though, probably after my trip to en francais.

  TTRS & V50
Well after having to get a new windscreen to pass MOT, that was all sorted. And another year of trouble free driving, just one thing, i didn't know 3/4 front plate was a MOT failure ?! Lucky i had my original one in the boot, so that was all the tester wanted to see.

Anyway, went back home to fit my F1's after sealing them with Poorboy's sealant. Just about to fit them and noticed that one of the PE2's had a dirty great gash on the inside tyre wall where it had been rubbing on the previous owners coilover strut, gutted. Ordered two more T1-R's from Camskill at the grand price of 60 quid, bargain. Will fit them by the end of the week i hopes.

Quick update to finish..

Got the two new Toyo's through and got them all fitted and balanced..

It was then time for the voyage to Bordeaux. As per thread below..

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?525012-Epic-Euro-Journey..&highlight=

Absolutely brilliant the car performed. So impressed with it, but now it has come to the time..

It's now FORSALE.

Due to reasons of having it 2 years and have done exactly what I want to it, I want to try something else. It also doesn't get driven as I'm at UNI. I've contemplated keeping it forever and making it a track car in 2 years once I've finished Uni, but thought it best to sell it.

May update with a few final fair well pictures next week..

  TTRS & V50
It's a great colour to be fair, much better than titanium :O Lol.

My first car was silver too, so 4 out of my 5 years driving i've had a silver car, time to change me thinks.. Lol.
