My Sunny Gti-R

Thought I'd chuck some pictures of my other car up incase anybody is interested.

Used to use it for sprints and hillclimbs a few years ago until the turbo destroyed itself, it was sat in a rented garage for a while but we moved house last year so I've got it back home now and just got the bug back to crack on with it 😎

I'll try and update things with all the new bits as they go on, hoping to have it finished by the summer!

Awesome, car. How long you had it?

I always wanted a Sunny GTI-r. Had plenty of pulsars (5 I think) but something really cool about the sunny. I much preferred the gear knob, rubber gaiter, clocks etc in the sunny. Hated the floppy leather stuff in the pulsar. I did start collecting bits years ago to add to a pulsar (still have a sunny gtir steering wheel in my wardrobe)

Do you know of any other white sunnys? (Ending VRX) as my mate had a white one and it’s amazing how the values have come full circle. His was a pretty cool car (love to know where it is now) in that it must have been one of very few modded ones back when they were nearly new with HKS BOV, HKS induction, HKS boost controller, custom charge cooler etc. It was madness to us at the time coming from old RS turbos and cossies, different world. The girl he bought it off had ‘upgraded’ to it from an escort cosworth. She sold it just around the time the imports flooded in, he paid £7k for it iirc and I know when she first tried to sell it was around £12k she was asking (in exchange and mart, none of this internet malarkey) she had no chance once the imports killed the value down.

I’ve still got the GTIROC calendar where mine was January (circa 2007)

Always loved these and yours looks really nice! Was it the pulsars not the sunny’s that were limited to 112mph?

Thanks everyone, should be a responsive 500ish bhp once its finished.

Yes pulsars were limited to 112, there were a few differences between the two and that was one of them.

I'm sure I've seen a picture somewhere of that one. Had mine 18 years now, did you have a similar user name on the owners club as I'm sure I recognise it?

Wow that’s great you’ve had it so long. Yes, albeit as jameswrx2 for last 17 years (did join before but lost login) . Had my first gtir 22 years ago (which makes me feel old)

Wow! Cool as hell.

First pic makes me nervous being a honda owner, seeing it in real British winter conditions :ROFLMAO:

Looks clean as and that's some snail and choice of suspension

I definatly remember your user name. I bought it in Oct 2002, that was a few years before the values started dropping and everybody was breaking them for bits 🙄 I remember when you could buy a half decent one for 2k 😂

It looks better in the pictures than it really is! The rear arches have a bit of bubbling and the laquer on one of the rear quarters is coming off, and the pass side sill needs some rust cutting out.

Bodywork isn't my thing but I know a few people in the trade so all that will be getting sorted out in the next few months.

First picture the brake discs look as big as the wheels.

Nice.

They're not far off, AP racing 4 pots with 330mm discs under 16" wheels. The standard brakes aren't even up to stopping a standard car, think they're actually smaller than the brakes on my 172 😲

😁😁 But why though? I mean the're both 2 litre turbo 4x4 hatchback.
Thing is - that's about the only similarity.

85% of Joe Public today would love a Golf R because it's a Golf and quick. "Stomp on pedal - car goes BWARP *fart* BWARP" Even a minter GTi-R would see the majority of the 2020 populous sneer and roll their top lip in disgust. "A Nissan? Ugh"

Hence why (as per the comments above) - the Sunny earns heaps of coolness points. And let's face it - when was the last time you saw one on the road?

Like other cars from Japan of the time - a fantastic, unique and sadly never to be repeated era.

Started looking at these on the auctions now 😂
Not many about at all!

They all got broken for parts when they were worth peanuts and people used to just scrap shell's rather than fix the rusty bits 🙁 I had to seriously up the value at my last insurance renewal!

Stuff of dreams for me between 18-22 years old.
What power was it running?

Never had it dyno'd when I had the GT3071 on it but I'm guessing around 420 ish bhp, it's a 2.3 stroker too! It did an 11.9 1/4 mile at 122 mph in the wet with a load of wheelspin off the line!

@Mark.B - are the comments about chocolate gearboxes all true? Or are they a lot more robust than that?

Robust is definitely not a word I'd use 😂

I've got a Quaife gearset in mine now but before that I broke 4 standard boxes, luckily I can build them myself! It's just luck how much abuse they take, usually upto 350 bhp is ok but I've stripped gears with a lot less 😂

The 3rd/4th and 5th gear selector forks are weak too 😉

My brother deals with gti-r but I think he’s might have a white sunny give him a look on he’s website torque of the south motorsport (Bob)

That was an ‘always wanted’ years ago when I had my pulsars. Wouldn’t pay what they’re worth these days (unless I was rich making a collection)

Does he still do Gtir parts? I met Bob years ago at Castle Combe and I've bought parts from him in the past 😉

A Golf R is about 300kg heavier 🍔🥧 have they started using a proper 4wd system on them yet or are they still fwd but send some power to the rear on special occasions (like mid corner) 🤣

The new Mk8 has the latest 4-motion system which now features a Torque Vectoring rear diff.

Which is essentially what Mitsubishi were doing in the 1990's.
