My Tyre Story

  GOLF GT TDI
The Story.

On the 16th of February last year I just left my house on my way to Aylesbury to get my brand new PowerFlow exhaust system fitted. I left later than I expected to I was in a bit of a rush to get there as it takes around about 45mins to get there…

Anyway I went on the main road and about 5 minutes later I heard a massive thump under the back near side wheel… didn’t think much of it just run of a bottle or something as I saw back stuff fly in the air… couple of seconds later my car started to jump up and down on that wheel so I pulled in at the lay-by. My mate got out to look and couldn’t see anything so I moved forwards a bit more till see could… he then shouted “ITS ONLY A STONE” but I knew it weren’t as my tyres where only 40mm high so I looked it… (The picture below is what I saw) …

………
I thought nothing to worry about its only a small bolt at this time it was getting on to 10:25am and I am supposed to be there at 11:00am.. So I quickly turned the car around and changed the two back tyres for my old standard 15” Clio wheels and left the front as 17” and went to PowerFlow.

Once my exhaust was sounding great I really needed to get my alloys back on to finish it off. I went to the tyre garage… they said “we usually would be able to fix small punchers but we couldn’t with this”. I said “why” and they gave me the tyre to look at… (the pictures below is what I saw) …

I couldn’t believe it, it was over an 8inch construction bolt which was obviously being used on the construction site opposite where it happened… one of the employers came out of the garage and said “if I didn’t have such a new tyre it would have blown and possibly rolled the car” lucky it was a rear wheel… the most annoying thing is though I only had the exact same tyre changed 2 weeks ago due to rolling over 5 nails.

(sorry about the pictures the tyre is in my garage now)

also completly ripped my rear wheel arch apart, just lucky it wasnt on the other side as the fuel pipe is there :S

What does the length of the bolt have to do with repairing the tyre? So long as the hole was within the tread, why was it such a disaster?
