Nath's RB track car build

Well thought I better update my thread, I have done a bit here an there with the Sunflower strip. But not lots due to work and lack of enthusiasm.

So got the 172 hubs I used to move the RB back off. I cleaned them up and then painted them ready to send to @NorthloopCup
image.jpeg

I also got some new bearings via @Feirny via ECP to send away with my hubs to get them pressed in while they are away.
image.jpeg

As yet I have not been to pick up my roll centre hubs but have some lovely pictures
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

Picked up some toys along the way
Peltor WRC intercom and headset to go with our Peltor helmets
image.jpeg

Found myself a BTB stealth back box after talking to BTB who put me onto one of their customers who had purchased a ninja back box so this was going spare.
image.jpeg

After making friends with a certain someone he offered me his front section. Gave me some sh*t about being worth more as it has some scraps from Nordschleife. My reply was "my ar*e" but I took it off his hands anyway!! So all I need now is to sort a bracket for the rear mount.
image.jpeg

Recently I picked up PMS rear bearing kit thanks to @Djw John which will go very nicely with my PMS rear beam strengthening kit
image.jpeg

A couple of months ago I set about removing all the wiring looms I could from the Sunflower. So I removed the two looms going to the rear, the passenger door, the bulkhead to engine bay and disconnected the engine loom to allow removal of the engine. However I was unable to remove the dash loom or the drivers door loom as the Sunflower is too far over in the garage. So will have wait until the shell is about to depart before I can get them out!!

Up to today, I spent 1/2 hour in the garage this evening, trying to do the last few little bits to get the engine into a position to come out.
I removed the gearbox selector to shifter coupling and the dogbone. I also found out why there is a difference between ph1 & ph2 dogbones. Which is a little bracket on the back of the gearbox, the little hole in front of it is where the ph2 twisted dogbone would sit.
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

I then removed the nuts holding the manifold in place as I have been having trouble removing the Cat underneath. Big it one less thing stopping the engine coming out!!
image.jpeg

I then removed the gearbox upper mount, which in true Clio style didn't come off easy and I had to remove the lower bracket from the gearbox
image.jpeg

image.jpeg

What's left....

Well the engine mount on the drivers side to remove, the gearbox lower mount where it bolts to the subframe and lastly those pesky pipes for the heater matrix :rage:

Hello mate I don't suppose I could pester you for the Ph1 interior wiring diagrams please?

Thanks

Unfortunately buddy it isn't straight forward as I'm sure you think it is, they are not PDFs. I have a genuine Renault wiring diagrams book, there are multiple drawings for all the different circuits so time consuming to find the right one. Then I have to scan it etc and unfortunately the only place I can do that is work who wouldn't take kindly to it.

What info are you after exactly?

ahh I see, I must if seen a post about someone asking you for similar info. Not to worry.

Well I'm just in the process of chopping my interior loom down a bit more, the first time I got lucky, so want to do it a bit more carefully this time

Due to the bad weather my cover on the RB had got ripped so took the opportunity to remove it read to fit the new one
image.jpeg

I took the opportunity while the cover was off to do a little work on the shell. I started by removing the remaining redundant plastic trim to give access to the rear wiring loom.
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

I then removed the rear loom, interesting that the design has changed from the ph1. It is now one loom for the rear that come from the passenger side and splits just behind the passenger seat to go to the drivers side.
image.jpeg

image.jpeg

All removed and wrapped up
image.jpeg

I also obtained a 172 cup rear bumper today, so I stuck that on while I was at it
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

All the redundant plastics, if anyone needs any of if give me a shout. Otherwise it's going to the tip!!
image.jpeg

Finally covered back up for night

Top work matey

Thanks buddy

Love it!

Just read through all of this, properly top work

Get some ph1 wings, slam panel and lights and make a racing blue ph1.5

Cheers matey, just not moving as fast as I would like!! But that's due to money and my time to do stuff

With regards to putting a ph1 front end on a ph2, its been done as has a RB ph1

Well had a spare 3/4 hours today.....

So I managed to get those pesky heater matrix hoses off
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

After a number of discussions with @NorthloopCup I decided like many before me to go down the EPAS route. Won't be using the rack etc from the ph1, so rather than splitting pipes and draining I removed the pump & bracketry.

The final things left to do that prevent the engine coming out was the lower gearbox mount and the left hand engine mount
image.jpeg

So it's now all ready to come out, just need a quick tidy up in my garage to get the engine crane out. So maybe next week the engine can come out. Then take the final bits off the sunflower shell, then time to say my goodbyes to the sunflower

Well yesterday I thought I'd try and get the engine out of the sunflower. I took off the alloy bonnet, setup my engine crane and then realised I didn't have all my lifting slings to hand so had to give up 😞
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

However my friend came round today with a balance bar and well today was the day. I've only had the car for 2 years and 3 months and I've finally got the engine out!!
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

Now the engines out I need to seriously look at what I still need off the sunflower shell before I then scrap it. I hope to get the bits I want off it during this week so that I can weight it in next weekend.
image.jpeg

Now the engine is safe back inside my garage. I now need to get on SGS Engineerings website and get myself an engine stand. Then I can mount it and start doing the midlife refresh

Well I got the wee man to bed early so thought I'd have an hour in the sunflower. Having had the engine out a few days I've been musing over what bits I want to keep from the sunflower that I could need to put in the RB.
So I started by removing the pedal box as I'm transferring the ph1 loom albeit trimmed down so no fly by wire here!!
image.jpeg

Next up was to remove the rear beam, I might use the mounts that bolt to the shell. If nothing else it'll lighten the shell so we can hand ball it out of the garage onto the trailer for scrapping, unless someone wants it!!
image.jpeg

I couldn't resist while I was in the garage taking a couple of covers off the engine so I could look at the cambelt condition. Those with a good memory will remember from the start of my thread that the aux belt was extremely poor condition and was ready to fail. The cambelt doesn't look too bad, no matter as its getting changed along with lots of other parts treating this engine like it should have always been
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

I also got some more parts today to give the engine some new life
image.jpeg

Plus I got this little beauty before Christmas which is a welcome addition

Have you released the tensioner pulley? If not its in the wrong position mate.

Took a few Clio related but to work to refurbish. First up were the rear caliper carriers, I started off using the aqua blaster which cleaned the unpainted bits lovely. However it was clear I would need some with a bit more muscle.
After Aqua blasting
image.jpeg

While I was using the aqua blaster I thought I would move onto the upper cambelt cover. Unfortunately I don't have a before shot but you can see it a few posts back. The aqua blaster made short work of it and it came up quite well I think. It's ready for some paint now, well might remove the casting flashes first
image.jpeg

image.jpeg

I then moved onto the grit blaster to get the carriers sorted, which I made better progress with. Still took about 30 minutes a piece though to get in all the little crevices and lettering. This is the first one done
image.jpeg

Here they are complete and ready for paint
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

Well while I was in the garage photoing these cleaned up bits I couldn't help removing some bits off the engine. So I decided to remove the thermostat housing, this will be the next piece to be aqua blasted
image.jpeg

image.jpeg
image.jpeg

Unfortunately still not done anything about an engine stand. But I've had a very kind offer from a mate who'll lend me one. Thanks buddy

Well I hoped to spend quite abut of time in the garage today but unfortunately it didn't happen like I planned!!
Managed to spare 3/4 hour this evening so here we go.....

I decided to do a little more on the engine so first up I removed the wiring loom final connections on the starter motor, next was to remove the lower plastic cambelt cover
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

Then I started to remove the gearbox, first off was the starter motor
image.jpeg

After working out what was the safest way to unbolt and keep the engine stable as it's still on the crane. Then a number of nuts and bolts later it was off
image.jpeg

Then finally just add a bolt in for the engine leveller to ensure engine is supported
image.jpeg

Nice rusty old clutch and flywheel!!
image.jpeg

I hope it will be an engine to be proud of when I am finished. As a minimum cleaned up, but painted where possible.

I ordered a few tins of VHT in different colours last night so they should be here to start painting the bits that are ready next week.

Thanks for looking

Well today started with taking the little dude for his first skiing lesson (can't wait until he's old enough to snowboard!!)
image.jpeg

So back onto the car, I tarted up the hubs a bit where Hammerite had chipped while they were away for the roll centre mod with @NorthloopCup Then I carried on with stripping bits off the engine, so I removed the rusty clutch and flywheel. Which latterly I realised wasn't the best idea as I need the flywheel in place so I can lock the crank out to remove the crank pulley. Out of interest does anyone one know the thread size for the flywheel bolts as I will get a tap to clean the threads out. It's a fine thread probably M8x1, when I'm not being lazy I'll get my thread gauge out!!
image.jpeg

I then removed the top and bottom inlet manifold, quite a bit of oil evident in everything!! All needs a good clean up and paint.
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

Once I had taken off the inlet manifold off it gave me chance to look at the inlet ports on the head. Is it supposed to look like this or has it had some dodgy diy porting done?? It's all ridged, best way I can describe it is it looks like contours on a map. Well looks like something Ill have to get sorted out while I'm doing!!
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

Well off out for tea, might see if I can do a bit more later

Crank thread pitch is m9x1 mate and the marks in the cylinder head are cnc marks. They all have them mate, so no dodgy diy porting done there.

Quick update for today....

I took the thermostat housing and the manifold it bolts to for Aqua blasting at work today. Rather happy with the results

image.jpeg

Again these like the other bits are ready for some paint. The VHT paint was dispatched today so hopefully will receive it tomorrow. My wife is rather handy with a spray can so maybe, I'll convince her to get some paint on the cleaned up bits at the weekend!! She seems happy to bake them in the oven, might see if I can buy a cheap oven off eBay

Next up for aqua blast clean is my rear calipers, obviously have to be a bit careful with these and ensure they are fully washed and blown out on completion. But hopefully I'll get some before and after shots while I'm doing tomorrow

Behind every build there is someone who knows what they're doing. With most stuff I'm pretty handy and will have a got at anything. But when it comes to engines I'm a bit apprehensive, the last engine I rebuilt was at college as an apprentice many many years ago, it was a pinto but it didn't have to run. In my earlier years I had a mk4 escort which I managed to get the timing terribly wrong, so to say I'm nervous about the engine work is an understatement. However what I do have in my Arsenal is a Master Technician who is always on hand to answer my stupid questions  Which aim sure on more than one occasion he has probably been shaking his head!!

Anyway after my update last night I had a short discussion with him about the best way to remove my crank shaft pulley bolt. I asked if I could use the crank locking pin to do it, he said it would be up to the task so off I went to put the pin in. To be honest it was a bit more difficult to get in than I thought, it took quite a number of rotation before I got it in the right hole :tonguewink:
image.jpeg

I then loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt and removed the crankshaft pulley. While I was there I unbolted the water pump pulley as well
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

I then couldn't help myself so I removed the water pump as well as there is a new one to go in
image.jpeg

Nice pile of scrap starting!! The pulley will be replaced by leightweight items
image.jpeg

Then I was asked to look at the crankshaft keyway to see if it was pointing the right way?? It was...
image.jpeg

I was then asked to look at the camshaft positions, which I was told the inlet was retarded. Which I took as him abusing me but he was talking about my engine!!
image.jpeg
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

Well that's it for now, just need to get my finger out and order this engine stand to carry on with the engine work.

Thanks for looking

Well no work is to be done tonight as I'm tired

But I did manage to order myself one of these today, which maybe here tomorrow or Thursday
image.jpeg

image.jpeg

I also order one of these at the same time as I had to borrow a mates
image.jpeg

In other news these arrived today  So I can make a start painting the engine bits that have been cleaned up already and also finish refurbishing the front and rear brakes.

Bit more aqua blasting today, engine mount cleaned up ready for powder coating
image.jpeg

In other news progress has been made with @NorthloopCup and my uprated rear brake setup. This is a new design stub axle made from EN24T and a caliper bracket made from 7075T651. This will allow the use of a different disc from the Renault range with a bigger wheel bearing. You will have no doubt seen our 3D print on Mark's thread, well I'm happy to say production has started Stub axles are in production, which should be complete in the next day or two. Closely followed by the caliper brackets. Then final proof fitting, they will then be winging their way onto Marks car ready for her maiden voyage following his fantastic build

I've just read through your whole thread (after seeing your link in Mark's thread) so you've now got at least two readers.

Nice work, hope you get it running soon!
