Need a little help with an M.O.T failure...

  1.6 focus zetec....
...My dads car went in for its m.o.t today and came back out with a failure and £120 repair bill which i think is a load of toss!!

Heres what if failed on:

1) Nearside rear brake recording little or no effort

2) Offside rear brake recording little or no effort

3) Nearside rear parking brake recording little or no effort

4) Offside rear parking brake recording little or no effort

5) Offside rear brake pipe excessively corroded

6) Service brake efficency below requirements

and...

7) Parking Brake efficency below requirements

Now to me this all points to the hand brake and £120 is very extreme and it could be down by myself....

Just wandered if anyone could tell me what i'd need to change etc...

Thanks

Well the first 2 are not the hand brake.

Seems the rear brakes are shot. Possibly due to the corroded brake pipe but not sure.

what are they offering you for the £120?

discs? pads? handbrake cables? brake pipes?!?!

also what make/model car is it

OK so not all of it points to the hand brake....

Info that might also be usefull is that it has drums on the back and not disc'

Its a ford fiesta... i know this is a renault forum but i know the people on here are a lot of help....

The £120 would get the car through the m.o.t so i all the parts needed plus labour

oh god, drums! well i'm afraid i'm out now, have no experience of sorting out drum brakes, sorry.

but surely they have to tell you what ur getting for £120 ?? sounds a bit suss to me...!

  BMW M3
Yeah, not good on drums (both meanings lol)

I would just askl them what they will do to get it through the mot and for 120. Should give you an exact breakdown and then youll be able to see if its fair.

This is the reason i only get my cars MOT at places that only do MOTs.

In this case it sounds like it may just need some new shoes in the drums. Personally, i would get to Kwik-fit and get a free brake test just to make sure.

Also, i would go back there and say you have just had a quote for the work from another garage and is substantially less in price than the £120 they quoted, ask for a breakdown of the price to see what they are charging for.

I'll bet you £20 all they do is clean the shoe linkage up in the drum and knock up a new pipe.

could be either the rear shoes need some adjustment/replacing or the wheel cylinders are leaking, the shoes can stick on slightly too,so id get the wheels and drum faces off, give everything a good clean and adjust the drums and go from there

i did that most weeks with my mini's lol
