Networking Q. DNS error with laptop/xbox.

I am trying to connect my xbox 360 to xbox live via an ICS through my wireless laptop.

It recieves an ip, but I keep getting a DNS error, and don't know why. Is there anyone here that's good with networking?

I'm assuming your laptop does not have DNS issues. I'm also going to assume you have done the basic checks such as pings to the xbox etc.

Find out your laptops DNS servers and manually set them on the xbox. To find out your DNS servers click start/run then enter into the box

cmd

press ok then type

ipconfig /all

press enter and look for DNS Servers. There should be two listed. Enter those two sets of IP's into the xbox.

Ok, done that. Manually put in the dns but still no luck. Laptop works fine and connects to the internet.

Could it be the firewall on my laptop? Would it stop the xbox connecting through it? I have just thought of that? I have the xp firewall and zonealarm, but I think I turned the windows one off.

turn off ICS reboot then turn ICS back on and reboot?

If the xbox is getting a ip from ICS then ICS should give out the dns entry also - might just be a bug?

I've spent the whole weekend re-booting every thing in different orders lol. I thought if the ICS gave the ip, then it should give the dns, but on testing the connection on the xbox, it confirms ip, but fails on the dns.

You can ping the xbox yes ?

if so then it sounds like you have a routing issue. The packet being sent to the DNS server is either not getting to the DNS server or the return packet is not getting to the xbox. You need to figure out which first, then you can fix it from there.

Yes I can ping the xbox. I have no idea what to do if it's to do with the router itself, but I will try turning off the firewalls to see if that helps.
