New 172 Owner- Track Car To Be!!

  172 Cup (Track)
Bought a 2003 Clio 172 today, 79k miles and a pretty straight wee thing. Plan on turning it into a track car on a sensible budget (if it costs too much it'll spoil it for me) and use it as often as possible at Knockhill and maybe some English tracks if i get a few mates involved!

has a noisy dephaser at idle so that & timing belt are priority.

Will be after uprated suspension, front brakes, exhaust, tyres, a full strip out and bucket seats and roll cage!

Heres some pictures, advice wanted!!

Welcome mate, have a look through some of the track car threads on here for some inspiration and have a search in the relevant sections for the other advice you're after. Should be plenty of useful info

  Clio 172 Cup
DS3000 brake pads, Brembo HC discs, Braided brake lines, ATE super blue fluid, Spax RSX coilovers, Whiteline Rear Anti Roll Bar, 15 inch wheels with 195/50/15 Yokohama AD08 tyres.

Make sure you get good FIA approved bucket seats. Fibreglass at least. Not tubular framed as they are very uncomfortable. 4 point harnesses with aircraft style buckle.

Roll cage will be expensive. Full cage or half? Think there's a group buy for a safety devices one.

Other things like Ktec induction kit and full stainless exhaust system....oh and a 330mm racing wheel.

That's my advice for track.

Try it as it is before deciding what mods to do. .
They're plenty capable without spending anything.

Depending how far you want to go with it a set of coilovers or cooksport springs to tighten it up a little for knockhill and a decent disk and pad set up for starters then get some track tires and give it a go.
A polly dog bone mount will also help at knockhill for gear changes going into some of the tighter corners on the back section. I've got a powerflex kit I've just removed if your local.

Nice to see another Clio up at knockhill.

Keep its cheap, a new set if cup shocks and eibachs/cook sport springs will set you back £300, decent discs, pads and fluid will sort you out on the brakes, other than that just go and use it, upgrade as you feel it needs it, not what the forum says you need.

  172 Cup (Track)
Cheers, like you say suspension, brakes and tyres will be priority, but i want so much more and to buy it all at once would cost thousands, which i dont want to do!!

Ive actually seen a 172 Cup which already has a lot of track orientated stuff, but still a road car, for a decent price considering all the bits on it. Has Koni coilovers, brembo discs/pads, braided lines, Yozza exhaust, ktec induction, Ktec mounts, Toyo tyres etc. The guys proving hard to deal with so this one is the track car if nothing comes of buying the Cup!

The lower mount bushes sound like a good idea, give me a shout when your back and ill come along. Im just in Glenrothes.

No problem it's only done a few hundred miles but I bought a full set of black series bushes.

All right, I ve just bought a 172 cup to turn into a track car but still ok for road. First bit of cash has gone on steering wheel and new bushes for roll bar. Next is brakes and tyres, then the big spend comes! Going to take rear seats out and fit a rear cage, then slot some seats in. Anyone know what seats fit?? Sizes??

I ll be attending knockhill this year, who do you guys go through? Trackscotland?

  Cayman S, RB 182
Alright lads, I'm planning on hitting knockhill this year too. Bought an RB 182 last year as a winter run around and went up for a driver training day which pretty much sealed the deal. Going to use it as a track car over the summer months once I get my latest goodies whapped on. Should be a good laugh seeing as there are a few of us with similar plans.

I'm from Leven btw

I had DS2500 brake pads, Brembo HC discs, Braided brake lines, ATE super blue fluid, for my track day and I gave them a fair workout, perfect for me and my capability. G172 provided them at a great cost and super fast service. Get it done, you will be chuffed when they are all on
