New ball joint failed, or are my top mounts fubarred?

  172DD Cup
i fitted new ball joints last weekend along with new track rods and track rod ends, and the knocking when hitting bumps went away. for about three days. everything is still tight, but now there is vertical play again on the driver side wheel. assuming the ball joint hasn't already died, would the top mount be the likely culprit?

define "vertical play"?

shock bolts not tight enough?? i managed to do that!

just get it on a jack with the wheel off, and have a mighty good shake,
thats what i need to do in the morning unfort :(

which balljoints did you use? the majority of places will sell you the wrong ones with 10mm mounting holes. Also worth looking for wheelbearing play/wear and damage to the shock itself

its worth mentioning that i get the same amount of play if i hold the bottom of the wheel and the suspension near the top. would this rule out wheel bearing?
