I work on behalf of almost every major insurer in the UK, here are some interesting facts:

1. Only a broker makes money from car insurance, not the underwriter themselves. Aviva (who own Norwich Union) make a loss on motor insurance every year, for them it's nothing more than a route to market.
2. Rising premiums are caused in the main by no-win-no-fee compensation claims.
3. If you're male, and under 25, then you're far more likely to rate youself as being a better driver than you actually are, and consequently you have more accidents.

Regards

Fair play, Im 26 with full protected no claims. I just thought over 20% increase was abit sh*t for some made of stainless steel rather than tin lol

Fair points but why should I have to declare factory fitted options..

My issue with insurance companies is that they are clueless about cars. If I were to phone them up and tell them I am having my car chipped to reduce the power and make it more economical would they reduce the premium?

I have discussed this with my insurance company and if they are not declared they are not insured. So if you smash your motor up you aren't covered for those items and could also void your cover. Apparently I'm paying £90 extra for the spoiler pack!!!

I haven't either (I've just got the cup suspension + alloys). As far as I'm concerned they're just *standard* options. Would you declare metallic paint or optional sat nav?

Cant believe people are still declaring them. Its like going into a gay bar and bending over in the toilet to pick up something, asking for it really arent you?

but you know insurance companies, if you crash any excuse not to pay. I'm phoning Bell now - they don't seem to have a clue!

The asked me what factory fitted options I had and I told them. What would you say none? Only takes one clued up assessor to state you have undeclared modifications..

I took this from elephants site:

"Is your car modified from the manufacturer's standard specification? (e.g. alloy wheels)"

If you have cup packs is this Yes or No?

I don't know, rather be safe than sorry.

bell are asking me what the suspension height is! How the feck should I know. Wish I've never phoned them now.

I'm going try and argue that both are standard specifications. A red car or a metallic blue car are still both standard cars, but the blue is an option

It doesn't really matter what you think, it's all about what's required for the contract between the insurer and yourself. Technically, if it's not OEM at the time the vehicle was supplied it is considered an 'extra'.

There's a landmark case where someone had their wheels stolen from an Audi S3, £1600 worth, and when the claim was processed it was noted that this particular S3 originally came with pauper-spec steel rims. Audi themselves said that only 1% of S3's came with these wheels, however the insurance company successfully argued the point that the wheels had been uprated/modified, and so the Audi-owner received funds for steel wheels only.

When people buy insurance they'll normally always go for the cheapest option, that's human nature, but what they don't realise is that the cheaper policies are far more likely to argue over minutia, such as the above.

the whole point is that a cup pack is OEM. Anyway, I reckon I'm going to end up getting shafted over this.

bell are now saying an extra £51 and the suspension wouldn't be covered in a claim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! still arguing

£51!! bell have only charged me £14 for my eibach pro's and £14 for my spoiler. I asked about alloys and they said that would again only be £14! They wont be covered in the event of a claim though, only standard parts will be, but that is there policy on modifications, there arent many out there that will cover mods like for like these days.

I've just cancelled my Bell policy and gone back to Direct Line where everything is covered. Direct line is £462 vs Bell at £422 + the extra £51.Bell did take some sympathy on me and gave me free cancellation. What a complete feck up!!!It's laughable they can charge you extra for bits they then don't cover. The woman also said that antracite alloys made the car a higher theft risk. I asked her for the evidence on which this was based which needless to say she couldn't supply.Legalised fraud!

Its direct line that are charging me extra for the bits. They said the suspension doesn't increase the premium but the spoiler pack does. No consistency with these people. They recognise all the mini's packs but don't have a clue when you say cup pack for a clio. You'd think it would be in their best interest to know exactly what they are insuring.

I know. Luckily for me I only have the suspension pack, not the spoilers. It's a very grey area, I tried arguing that all proper Cups have the same wheels but technically that is a different car

I think partly is because the cup pack is listed as more than just suspension, the option according to Renault is:-Cup Suspension Pack - lower ride height, stiffer springs and dampers, stiffer tyre sidewalls, anthracite coloured wheels and revised steering geometry
